+1 on the katana 50. Loud enough to keep up with a band, but turned down to 0.5W it sounds great at bedroom levels. The built in effects are nice if you want to try things out but you can just ignore them.

Pathfinder 15r is the best small cheap solid state combo I know of, as long as you're not looking for heaps of gain.

There's a Katana Mk I 100 watt and a Mustang GT100 on the NZ Guitarists/Bassists facebook group for $400 & $450 respectively
