Just for the record, prior to his untimely death, Dimabag was working with Krank amplifiers on a new signature series amp, which was released after his death and is known as the Krankenstein... it's a valve amp.

I really don't see the merit in pointing to another muso and saying - he/she uses SS or valve. So what? His/her taste is different to mine/yours/everyone else's.

This is a trick question, I'd (cynically) say designed to divide and conquer us!

There is no merit, in Dimebag's case he used SS amps because no valve amp on the market that could offer the distortion he wanted. But Krank managed to get the same sound with a valve amp, so he went to valves. The Krankenstein actually sounds pretty much exactly like his old Randall, so if you can get a SS amp and a valve amp to sound the same, then where is the benefit in having either technology over the other?

I agree. But tone is only a part of the equation for me. Portability, cost and reliability all enter into the decision. In that event, SS wins hands down, IME.

Why?

I'm also a believer in the idea that if you desperately want your sound to be a Plexi, or a Twin, or whatever - get one.

Perhaps, but a well-designed and well spec'd valve amp will be reliable, only need the tubes replacing every couple of years and I have carted around some pretty stupidly heavy SS combo amps. Cost I do agree with though, a valve will always cost more than a transistor (even if you can spend a lot of money on transistors if you want to).

That's the part that gets me. $300 every couple of years for new tubes...

a clean tube amp sounds different to a clean ss amp.

in fact the more distortion you add, the more amps sound the same.

Fools! :)

I do it every 15,000km (I average 11,000 a year), but I also use my car every day. I use my amp maybe 5 days a month.
