Re: solid state or valve
This is a trick question, I'd (cynically) say designed to divide and conquer us!humphreybear wrote:hi I was wondering about the difference between solid state and valve amps what are the pros and cons of both?

There is no merit, in Dimebag's case he used SS amps because no valve amp on the market that could offer the distortion he wanted. But Krank managed to get the same sound with a valve amp, so he went to valves. The Krankenstein actually sounds pretty much exactly like his old Randall, so if you can get a SS amp and a valve amp to sound the same, then where is the benefit in having either technology over the other?Rog wrote:I really don't see the merit in pointing to another muso and saying - he/she uses SS or valve. So what? His/her taste is different to mine/yours/everyone else's.

I agree. But tone is only a part of the equation for me. Portability, cost and reliability all enter into the decision. In that event, SS wins hands down, IME.so if you can get a SS amp and a valve amp to sound the same, then where is the benefit in having either technology over the other?

Perhaps, but a well-designed and well spec'd valve amp will be reliable, only need the tubes replacing every couple of years and I have carted around some pretty stupidly heavy SS combo amps. Cost I do agree with though, a valve will always cost more than a transistor (even if you can spend a lot of money on transistors if you want to).Rog wrote:I agree. I'm also a believer in the idea that if you desperately want your sound to be a Plexi, or a Twin, or whatever - get one.

in restecp to the statement that:
just add modellers to the equation thenso if you can get a SS amp and a valve amp to sound the same, then where is the benefit in having either technology over the other?
