110V AMP Converted to 240V...!%$##"?
Hi guys,
I just got my new/very old Peavey triump from the states today...somehow I was under the impression that the voltage was switchable.....it isn't and I want to cry....now I need to get a step down transformer that handles at least 200w and the most affordable ones are on TM but may burn my house down.
Is it much of a mish to get these converted? what would be the $$ guide (I'm brokeish) and who would I hit up?
Are any of you guys in the know?
Many thanks.

If your anywhere near Hamilton, you can talk to John Gilmour. He told me on a few amps there is a small chance it can be changed inside. Who did you get it shipped over by and how much did that cost if you dont mind me asking... I was quoted 600-800 to send over a LP, I know thats not the norm, but thats what I was quoted. Im not sure how legal it is but I am pretty sure if you know a mate that is a sparky he can split the voltage on a dedicated plug in your home and put a USA plug on it.

Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

600-800 to ship an amp???!!! I think someone's trying to take you for a ride aye.Tonemaker wrote:If your anywhere near Hamilton, you can talk to John Gilmour. I got a Fender Tweed case sent over, with a Strat body in it and a few other bits and bobs (similar weight to a full guitar) and it cost $125USD.
A LP is obviously heavier, but not 600-800 heavier!
Nothing to see here.

Thanks for your feedback dude.
Shipping was $115US and that was discounted by the trader. We have lost groung on the US $ and they have had a shipping hike.
Having said that, I have had a few guitars sent over from $115 to $30ish. It was usps priority international.
Those look like crazy UPS prices.

This is the exact info he gave me at the time, about 4 months ago. It was one of the heavier LP customs, with the chainsaw case. I decided against the shipping it in the end.
"Shipping to NZ would be $880 insured via UPS. It would be cheaper via USPS (about $500) but I would need to fit it in a smaller box due to size restrictions."

Why ya poppin fuses? I bought a DSE fairly large transformer, in a white box with handle. I run a Laney 30w amp, and my GT-8 off it with no problems, never blown a fuse. I don't know what its rated at but I think I paid about 50 dollars. You should be able to get one off TM for not too much....dayl wrote:Back to my lil issue at hand... extension cords are out and I'm all ready poppin fuses.

If the fire service saw this stuff they would be having your power cut off right now as a safety precaution!
A long extension lead is not a substitute for a stepdown transformer!
A 110V shaver socket is going to explode if you try to draw 200W through it!

How would you fix the problem master?
P.s how much would you charge to cut the wood for my new head cab..if I don't kill it first?

I would take it to Andy the Peavey tech downstairs at Atwaters Musicworks or to Clarry Schollum at 34 Audio. Andy will be able to say whether the transformer has alternative voltage taps or whether you need a new transformer for 240V operation.
Wood stuff, I need to see it to quote. Probably not much.

Awesome, thanks mate.
Would prob be less hassle to buy the wood from you also, I'll get it measured up and be in touch.
Cheers

Just took a look at the triumph for ya and it says it has different transformers for 240 vs 110v, so you may be out of luck there, won't hurt to take a look though. Why the effort to bring a clunky old peavey over, do they sound good?

Yeah, from what I have seen, they sound good and have been recommended high gain JJ's to get it a lil sweeter.
Brought it over as I am on a budget and it was sillt cheap for a full tube amp, I saw a broken "I dont know whats wrong with it. its fizzing and popping' one of these go for $370 I think it was on TM, which is a bit more than I paid.
Fixed bias but not at all bad for my first tube amp.
Cheers
