Speaker Shoot out

Post by GrantB »

OK, did an A/B with some speakers and amps in the weekend. Here's my findings.

Speakers
Celestion Vintage 30
Weber Alnico Blue Dog 30
Weber Silver Bell 30
Jensen P10R Alnico
All in Pine Cabs

Amps - Sovtek Mig 50, Trace Elliot Velocette 12R

Gats - Les Paul Standard - 57 Classics, 62 RI Strat, '58 Maton Jazz, 2004 Tele.

Celestion 30
Surpising results here. More mid punch than the others - almost too harsh at times. Loauder with less break up until very loud volumes. Excellent projection. Least articulate with complex distorted signal. Least complex with clean signal - tended to pull the mids together. Sounded good with Giubson Les Paul, ;ess so with single coils.

Weber Blue Dog
Early break up. Very articulate, especially highs. Rich harmonics even under harsh distortion. Clean shimmery bell (!) like tone. Wow, with the Velocette it was AC15 all over - very Edge like tones.

Weber Silver Bell
Not quite so early break up but still more so than the Vin 30. Solid bottom end with slightly more brittle tops than the Dog above. Compressed at higher volumes but retained bottom end - not flabby.

Jensen 10's
Tight and punchy - more upper mid and highs. Bright and sparkly with single coils. Bottm end lacking. Medium break up - in between the Blue Dog and Vin 30. Compressed at higher volumes.

So in all, most articulate and rewarding for my style was the Blue Dog. Least favourite was the Celestion 30 - sounded sterile and very average compared ot the others.

For what its worth I have run the Silver Bell and Blue Dog in together for gigging and it is a great pairing indeed.

How many speckers did you try because I prefer Vintage 30's in pairs rather than a 4x12. My favourite is G12 30H for 4x12 Marshall tones and Celestion Alnico's for strat tones. I have a quad with G12 30H speckers if you ever want to try it out.
