First World Problems - New Amp Choices

Post by jeremyb »

So I've been deliberating over posting this but I've got a budget of maybe upto $1500 to spend on a second amp and having some dilemmas over what to choose.

I've narrowed it down to either wanting something tubular with a 6V6 or two, 8" or 10" speaker, or maybe another digital amp? I don't need reverb or trem, but the following in no particular order are on my shortlist:

Supro Super 64 1606 - like a champ but slightly different flavour, single knob for the win.
Supro Delta King 10 - also like a champ but more knobs, digital reverb.
Blackface Princeton Reverb - Would need to build from a kit to stay in budget...
Blackstar Custom 10 (6L6) - So not 6V6's but...
Tweed Champ - Again would build from a kit, but I think for the money the supros would be a better investment.

But then theres the digital....

Boss Nex-Stage 40W, Nextone technology with the ability to choose 6V6, 6L6, etc power valve emulation.
Line 6 Catalyst 60W, cheap AF and sounds decent, the boutique mode especially appeals as its kinda Dumble-esque.

So what would you guys do? what other suggestions might there be?

Been about six months since a Princeton came up for sale, but the last two went for about $1800 each. I don't think they're simple kit builds...

What about Marshmallow's Trainwreck? Get a cheap 1x12 to go underneath.

10" can be nice and punchy but in my experience 8" in a small cab sucks balls.

My next amp will be a 100w class D poweramp that I can plug a pedal board with preamp into the front end and a quad into the other end.

The luxury of carrying fuck all cannot be understated.

The glory of a 4x12 cannot be overstated.

This is obviously totally different to what you are interested in, and for that I can only say that I never met a princeton I didn't like.

What about a Ryan built 2x6v6 amp head which covers blackface and tweed? Comes with a 2x12 cab but there could be some reconfiguration possible.

Seeing as you'd be getting such a good core tone with your AC10, if it were me, I'd be considering a pair of digital amps for a blissful dry/stereo wet setup. Yummo.

If you 3/4 close your eyes and squint, in a dark room, you could almost think it was a combo…

Spend the money on a power station. Open your current amp wide up. Never look back.
