I think you mean 'louder' not better. Many amps are meant to be 1x10 or 1x12 - not all sound better through more speakers.

As for 4x12, yes they're lots of fun, but gone are the days of my playing through a stack in my 3x3 metre office. Last time I played a 4x12 live was at an outside gig to a thousand people or so. I've also played them in pubs, and the beam from a closed back 4x12 is dreadful if you're in the firing line, dreadful if you aren't because you can't hear the fucking thing. More annoying is the complaints of your band being too loud.

One of the best tones I ever had was from a Mesa Boogie Subway Blues - with a 1x10. Would love to have that one back.
I know small cabs and 1x10s are a thing, they're just not my thing. Personal preference etc.

Jay's Princeton excluded. That 1x12 is just perfect.

I find having one 10" and one 8" in the bedroom is just perfect for me.

Agreed. Sometimes 12" can be a bit too much.

I don't have the Princeton! Although if Jean ever sells up...

I have a 2x10 Deluxe Reverb. Weird hybrids ftw!

Yep well that's the game, you find and use the gear that suits your senses and playing requirements. What model of Deluxe is the 2x10?
I've pretty much always changed the stock speakers in combos and cabs so that they can take a bit more drive before breakup, with LPs and 335s.
As history has it this was done almost unwittingly back in the '60s with the british blues boom, EC et al, I try to follow that formula and it's served me well to date eg put a Blue in the PR, the stock speaker just doesn't do it !!
Doin' that scrapyard thing.

It's a handwired Deluxe Reverb built by MikeC. Couple of mods (high-gain normal channel that is also affected by tremolo and reverb). Warehouse speakers. Blonde and oxblood.

Really starting to enjoy the amp now, different to the '74X and JTM45 as you'd expect.
Have solved the squealing occurrence and am settling into it being a handy unit to trot out around the place, all in all a bloody good little setup with a lot of character.
Doin' that scrapyard thing.

I recently built me a "Trinity Custom Plexi 6V6" which is based on a Marshall Superlead - but at a manageable 18-odd watts cathode biased. I also installed Global Power Scaling to further tame it. I've played it in a band mix and it has plenty of volume.

Got Clarry to change the bright cap to 100pf and he changed the cathode resistor to 180R to ensure that KT66s can be used effectively(without any overheating and shortening their life).
The amp now sings rather than screeches when the High Treble channel is turned up.

I'm glad you've got the amp sounding more like you wanted.
