What Rack Poweramp?

Post by murky »

Picked up a JMP-1 last week. Saw it hiding in the corner one of Guitar Gallery's FB pics, but wasn't on their website.

Holy shit, what an absolute kick arse piece of gear, should have got one years ago!!!!!

Anyway, what's the old-skool crowd using for tube power amps these days? Thinking a Marshall 50/50 - mainly to keep it in the family - but curious what the experiences are out there.....

TIA!

The jmp1 is an awesome piece of kit!

The 20w marshall rack power amp is quite sweet sounding if you can get your hands on one. Otherwise you could look out for a fryette.

I have a matrix poweramp if that tickles your fancy. No toobs though.

It’s accompanying 9200 power amps are a great choice that pop up on TM from time to time.

I had a matrix back in the day. Great amp, but really after tube, and ideally something that’ll colour the sound (in a good way) as well. I have no idea what that actually means, but currently running it into a PS100 which is flat, so looking for contrast.

Have you used a 20/20? Doesn’t overheat? Loud enough?

Any experience with the 9100/9200 5881’s vs the 50/50 and 100/100 with EL34’s?

I tried a 20/20 but it was so long ago that I can't really remember. Plenty loud I think. No overheating.

Never tried the EL34 loaded variants, but they’re good enough for Steph Carpenter.
I have a 6L6 loaded 9200, sounds primo.
As you’d expect, they do weigh a ton.
A non issue if you don’t have to move it on a regular basis.

Keep your eyes peeled.

don't have a lot of experience with a selection guitar poweramps myself, but I do enjoy the versatility of my Randall RT2/50, being able to switch between EL34 and 6L6 at the push of a button is great (specifically because I'm also switching preamps, I guess it's probably not as useful otherwise). HEEEAAAVVY though.

You definitely need to get a matching Marshall one, they look so good together!

Back when I had the previous series Marshall pre I ran it into the fx return of a Matchless HC30.

I'd consider selling my Randall RT2/50. You could load it with your choice or EL34 and 6550 pairs and compare them side by side. Also the added bonus of stock density controls, in addition to presence. Probably no heavier than the Marshall power amps..

Someone is selling a marshall 9100 power amp on FB. You have to take the full rig which includes a JMP1, case and controller though.

Backup JMP1?
