What's your favourite modern low gain tube amp?

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

Looking for opinions on best/favourite low gain modern (or at least modern in the sense of tube amps) ...
Im thinking the sort of amp you can plug into and enjoy some creamy rich compressed overdrive, but pull back to clean with touch sensitivity alone.
I know there are great options in terms of vintage amps, but if you had the cash and the hankering for something booooteek off the shelf what would you go for?

Two Rock Traditional Clean. No doubt. That thing sounds just spectacular on every demo.

More realistically, maybe the Mesa Filmore. The Cali Tweed had fantastic cleans but probably not enough gain even for you.

I must admit I have been Filmore curious when I've seen them come up. What would you say differentiates them from say a fender BF?

Out of the stuff I've actually played I'd say Bruno S100. I think it's basically the Dumble ODS circuit though.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A

Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

The Carr Slant 6 is my all time favourite amp—but only based on demos and Kemper profiles…I’ve never even seen one in real life :-(

Yes she's a rare beast. I think there are other forumites that share your adoration

Usable master volume. Switchable channels. No trem.

From YouTube videos? More rounded, bouncy, compressed sound. Closer to Dumble spectrum.

I'm fond of my Supersonic.

But I'd love to try something that covers that ground and more.

I'd love to play through a Dumble one day.

I'm Fillmore curious too.
In life, don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

Depends on gig levels, but the Suhr Bella at 22 watts can get some nice mild crunch past 4 on the volume.
Full power at 44 watts is more than enough for larger stages.
For mouse fart volumes at home, it works well with the Suhr Reactive Load and headphones/monitors.

The Fillmore is awesome, sold it because I needed the $$$ back then and now sort of downsized to a Revv D20, which is also awesome, it's a lunchbox sized amp with its own loadbox, if I had the $$$ I would get another Fillmore but combo the next time, or a Revv combo
