There’s a ‘64 Blackface Super Reverb at Cadenza.

It’s been there for years. And years.

Does anyone know anything about it?

Interesting. Reckon it's an export model? Can't be too many floating around.

Nah, it’s US. Has a step-down in the back.

It doesn’t have a price on it, but the price has changed dramatically every time I’ve been in there.

I’m wary: there was an AC30 that also sat there for years, which I knew the history of. It eventually sold. Price made me sweaty.

It is a museum, not a store!

Excuse my ignorance, but what’s Cadenza? Is this an Auckland guitar store?

It reminds me of the store at the start of Gremlins.

In a good way.

If that’s possible.

Yup. One of the last old school stores with heaps of cool shit. You gotta dig and snoop though the piles of stuff though…..

It is. Owned by Ed Pausma who is a lovely guy with a perplexing business model. He's more like a collector who wants to be teased with requests to buy something without actually having to sell it. The store is an Alladdin's cave of weird and often wonderful stuff. I think I met an actual Mary Kaye Strat there. (Grant, you saw it I believe; what did you think?)

In the past, he was a Larrivee dealer; back when the shop was in Takapuna. The new place is really hard to get to. Haven't seen him for about 5 years. Often think of him when I'm driving down K Road.

The rare times I've been on K road I've popped in to the shop. When asked the price of an item in there Eds reply was usually 'what do you think it's worth?' I have no idea how he stays in business.
I bought and sold a bunch of stuff with him back when he was in Takapuna. He seemed to have an easier time letting go in the 90s.

The impression I got from some of his friends is that he doesn't actually need to be in business.

That is what I heard too, but through a different channel

Oooo.... Intriguing! I know he used to have some pro looking photos of himself up on the wall behind the counter. I wonder if he wrote one absolutely awful number 1 hit ( that he'd never admit to) and still lives off the royalties?!

It's possible. He's actually a monster player when he can be bothered.

Maybe we should do a 'Speculation of Ed Pausmas passive income ' thread? Could be a lot of fun. I'd put forward that he was gun running in the 80s for a band of political rebels in South America.
