Transformers, robots in disguise...

Post by Danger Mouse »

Ok, not those kinds of transformers, I mean these kinds of transformers...

This is what Rob has had made specially for my custom amp he's building for me. I won't give away the specs (I don't actually know them to be honest), but they look impressive.

I won't give too much away about the overall amp design either, but there's a couple of really neat tricks that will be on it, plus a little addition to the pre-amp circuitry that is going to be extremely cool and pretty revolutionary asfar as I'm aware. It'll be a rock monster though, that I can tell you, although it is being designed to bea lot more versatile than that.

Earmarked for a delivery of the end of March... so I'll be at a gearfest shortly after!

Marque Magnetics actually... (not easy to spot in the small pic I posted).

From memory, Rob had lined up the transformers using a more well-known US supplier but then found these guys operating in NZ. The transformers are custom deigned specifically for my amp and are apparently way beyond anything you'll find in even top-level production amps. Rob will be able to add more, I don't really know too much about the actual design of the transformers, but he's very impressed.

Hey all,

These transformers (and the choke for that matter) have been custom made in NZ to deliver 100W from a pair of KT88's from our circuit design.

Check out the size of that output transformer (OPT) (the big one)! We will certainly not be having trouble with OPT saturation.

The OPT has also been speced for an extended frequency range so tons of bottom end punch from the KT88s. It will run into a matching custom made 4 x 12" running Eminence Governors which are highly efficient so this thing is going to punch like George Foreman.

Luckily I'm just off to the gym now... (seriously)

But it's going to be a heavy amp more than just in physical weight!

The KT88 power section of the Splawn Pro Mod is crushing - low-end extends beyond a typical EL34/6L6 amp, yet stays tight and focused.

Judging by the size of your OT, I'd say crushing will be a very apt term!

I'm still fairly unhappy that there are no robots in this thread.

I'm quite surprised that no one I know has every mentioned them before. Having some one here who could rewind or replace transformers locally is great!
