Audio Technica AT2020 vs AT2035
The mic is switchable between 3 pick up patterns, each with their own advantages. Cardioid, Omni and figure 8
Basically, Omni can hear everything 360deg. Cardioid mainly hears what's in front of it and is deaf to what's behind it. Figure 8 hears front and back and is deaf to sound from the sides.
AT 2020 is cardioid only.

Beeg, how often, and how, do you use the other patterns? Mainly curious about the Figure 8 one.

Thanks, I can understand that. So for just vocals or recording a guitar amp, the 2020 would be fine?

Figure 8 is how a ribbon mic inherently hears things. The classic example is in those old movies where you'd see a couple sing a duet either side of the mic while a big band played behind them. The mic turned 90 degrees to the band, hears the singers front and back and is almost deaf to the much louder instruments.slash-ed wrote:Beeg, how often, and how, do you use the other patterns? What's the suspension thingy that the more expensive ones fit into? Does the 2020 have that?

I use that to get a bit of room in on the recording as well as the close mic sound. I'm sure its got more uses but thats what I mainly use it for, same if I'm recording acoustic.

The suspension thingy isolates the mic from vibrations through the stand.Conway wrote:What's the suspension thingy that the more expensive ones fit into? Does the 2020 have that?
The 2020 doesn't include one but it's not always necessary anyway.

If you record vocals and acoustic together you can angle the fig8 mic so its null point (the deaf bit) faces the singer. That way it's mainly picking up guitar and rejecting the vocals coming from the sides. Another mic on the vocals and Bob's your 2 channel interfaces uncle.BG wrote:I use that to get a bit of room in on the recording as well as the close mic sound. Nb. Doesn't work in small spaces if you sing nice and loud. Plus, unless the mic is doing something especially nice for the sound of the guitar, as some ribbon mics might, it's probably not worth the effort.

Thanks again Capt. Thought it would be something like that.Capt. Black wrote:The suspension thingy isolates the mic from vibrations through the stand.Conway wrote:What's the suspension thingy that the more expensive ones fit into? Does the 2020 have that?

So back to Ed's OP, what's the difference between a 2020 and a 2035? Don't think that question has actually been answered, has it?

Yep that makes sense, though my tiny office and my large voice wouldn't helpCapt.
