desk recordings are generally awful and dry and defo benefit from a room mic or something like a hn4 adding some room sound

+1 on Capt. Black's thoughts.
If you can borrow a PA that can record multitrack (the Bull Kelp Surfers PA can), you won't regret it. I've had fantastic results from tracking in a rehearsal space (but then, I have a pretty good stash of mics).
