This is great, pretty much what I'm always trying to do with my A4 and failing, ahah.

Been following this from the start, it turned up on syntaur which is a US channel based on repairing all the good gear (well worth a watch, its a rabbit hole)

But Chris is a great guy, and is persistent in his quest :)

The Rockshop are doing some good discounts at the moment for some Modal synths.

The full-sized keyboard versions of these synths (8 has 37 keys/3 octaves and 8X has 61 keys/5 octaves) feature FATAR TP9/S keybeds. These keybeds are considered the gold standard in today's synthesizers by the synthesizer community. They are semi-weighted, velocity sensitive and can do channel aftertouch (not polyphonic aftertouch).

Regarding the sound engines, the Argon series feature a wavetable synth engine whilst Cobalt is a Virtual Analog synth engine. The Argon has a much broader sound palette as it can use wavetables whilst Cobalt can only do classic oscillator shapes (e.g. Pulse, Sawtooth). Tone wise, I prefer the Cobalt over the Argon.

If anybody is looking for a unit that doubles as a standalone synth AND a great MIDI keyboard, I'd suggest looking at these. To put the pricing in perspective, the Rockshop is selling the Argon 8X for $1,199. The only other MIDI controller (no synth engine) that Rockshop sells with a 61-key Fatar keybed is the Native Instruments KOMPLETE KONTROL S61 MK2, which they are selling for $1,399.

This is literally what I used to do back in the days... though I had an Atari ST :) Then a DX21 and a 4 track but went back to mods when I got more into PC's. Gravis Ultrasound cost me more than my PC ;)

Original cartridges and a bunch of others are available here: https://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/d.j.benson ... l/dx7.html

Just download the https://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/d.j.benson ... 7patch.zip file and extract it into a new folder in the cartridges directory for dexed (C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\DigitalSuburban\Dexed\Cartridges\ on windows)
