ACCURATE tuners!?

Post by borge »

so after doing the intonation on a few guitars with a few different tuners i still find myself doing the fine tuning by ear
because all the tuners ive used are so damn inaccurate :? i get reasonable results but i know it could be better.
so folks, can anyone recommend an accurate tuner?
up to $200ish
new or 2nd hand
portable (no software)
extra points if it can be used easily on stage
:o

I've never had a problem with my Boss TU2, but if you want something even more accurate look at a Korg rackmount tuner.

i dont really want to go rackmount.
i was thinking a TU2 or a korg DT10, but if i could get a standard (ie not stompbox) one just as/more accurate for cheaper that would be sweet hmmmm

I'm pretty happy with my planet waves floor tuner, and it does that strobey thing too.. $195RRP.
solid metal housing (built like a tank except heavier ;-) ). I'm not sharp enough to vouch for accuracy tho, and the first one I got was faulty (replaced on the spot by rockshop tho). test it instore and see what u think?

Are you sure that the tuners were the problem? For $30 you can get a tuner with accuracy of +- 0.01%. You'd have to have pretty good ears to top that, (though I'm sure you do...) :P The reason I ask is that I had a similar probelm finding pitch on my strat many moons ago. My problem wasn't the cheap tuner, but that the pickups were mounted too high and kept interfering with pitch. There are other obscure causes for guitar tuning trouble as well... maybe you could take your axe to a guitar tech? :)

Have you looked at the Korg GT-12. It has an analog meter and a digital readout. Personally I like analog meters. I know they flick around a little, depending on the damping on the meter action, but I like their feel. I need to buy one too as my Boss TU-12 finally gave up the ghost after 20 years of dropping and misuse. I like the Korg stuff, their DT10 looks nice, but prefer the metered ones. Given that your machine heads don't slip, the nut and saddles don't hold up the string, let alone a trem system not returning to it's original place and you string is tuned and intonation set as good as is possible, the other variable(s) is your fellow band members not being in tune with you because of something different with the above. So yeah the tuner matters but.........

ive used a few different cheap ones and the ones in multi effects units
and all have either: jumped around, cant track low notes, not enough graduations to be accurate :? maybe they all had flat batteries :?

my current gigging gat is floyd equipped (dive only) and is VERY stable, i tune it before the first set and its still good 3 sets later, but good points nonetheless.

thanks for the suggestions all :)

ive got a bit of time to decide (i just blew all my money on other stompboxes :D ) but ill be keeping an eye on trademe for something decent

I'd go for the DT-10, it's a hardy little unit and has tons of features, much the same as the Boss TU2 but cheaper.

so i got a Guyatone MT3 for $60 of trademe, its apparently more accurate than a TU2 but still the same problem!
although its the best tuner I've used its still too inaccurate for setting intonation.
oh well, ill stick with my ear for intonation and if i get too frustrated i might get one of these:

If you insist on absolute accuracy, anything short of an oscilloscope is going to leave you wanting....
