I'm not a Strat expert by any stretch of the imagination but I understand that those models manufactured before 1980 are particularly prone to midrange crisis.

I understand that their once tight and punchy mids become saggy - accompanied (and possibly caused) by a thinning of finish on the headstock and/or aged springs creating lack of tension and reduced performance of the trem.
