Pup Height

Post by crowbgood1 »

Adjusting pup height?? I've moved pups about and worked out that closer to strings gives me a bit more volume.
They sound a little brighter (I think). Any "rules of thumb" that apply?

Depends on the type of pickup and what sound you're trying to acheive.

Rule of thumb: Using your THUMB press a string down at the last fret, now using a steel RULE measure from the top of the pick-up/polepiece to the underneath of the string. You want about 2mm, use your ears to fine tune for personal preference. Bake at 180 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Single coils - as close as you can get before they get 'stratitus' - you'll know when you get it because you'll hear a wierd modulation in the tone, usually extra prevalent on the G string I think, about 14th fret. This is because the pole-pieces are pulling on the string (magnetized).

Humbuckers - as close as you can without distortion, you can sometimes find a sweet spot apparently. But I don't think I've ever found it
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Ok.....see what ya mean.... doing humbuckers.
I'm about 3mm away on neck pickup..any closer it distorts... there is a warm spot where it just start to break up a little.
With cheaper pups do you need back them off more??

not really. Higher output pickups will usually be ok to sit slightly further away.
I find every pickup is different, and just move them round till I find a spot where I like it.
Ummm....

I'm round about 4-5mm away from strings sitting static, I find the tone gets too much 'thump' on string attck if I'm much closer. This is on a strat copy with Kent Armstrongs.
