Strat 5 way ???

Can someone explain what the 5 way PUP selector actually selects on my 'lace sensor' strat?

I thought it was this.

Position 1=Bridge
Position 2=Bridge & Middle
Position 3=Middle
Position 4=Middle & Neck
Position 5=Neck

It does not sound like position 2 and 4 are a combination of 2 PUP's as the signal sounds thin and low output. I know H Buckers can be wired out of phase to give this sound, but not sure with single coil.

What can you guys tell me about this.

2&4 are 2 single coils wired out of phase, hence the low output and quackiness

Technically they're not 'out of phase', as two single coils wired out of phase actually gives a really weak nasally sound that's pretty unuseable. But they're in parallel, whereas a humbucker is two coils in series.

So can you wire them so bridge and middle are like a Humbucker?

You can, but you'd need a super switch or similar, something with an extra set of lugs on it. The American Deluxe guitars with S1 switch have those in-series options. It doesn't sound exactly like a Humbucker though because the coils are too far apart, but it is quite useable as a fatter, thicker tone.

the middle should be reverse wind, just swap the wires on the middle pick up and get it back in phase and you should be sweet

I just fixed the wiring in my Blazer (strat copy from 1980) and got the middle pickup working again. I was thinking last night that position 2 and 4 sounded a bit thin and low output. Different, and probably not that usable.

Now it is explained. It really is a strat copy!

I also disconnected the out-of-phase switch that was standard, and wired the pickups as per standard strat wiring. Maybe positions 2 and 4 would be better with the out-of-phase switch working, but probably not.
