DiMarzio EJ Custom humbuckers

Not sure why YouTube popped up this video for me, it was a comparison between Gibson Burstbuckers (not sure which ones) and EJ Customs. Blimey... those EJ ones are bright! They're bordering on single coil sounds.

Has anyone here tried those? Folks around here seem to have high opinion on EJ Strats. I have never associated him with humbucker guitars much.

Alnico 2 hbs match the description. Haven’t tried the ej ones.

In this particular case "Huh?!" translates to "I was asking for opinions on this particular product, not recommendation on alternate products" :winky:

I toyed with the idea of getting EJ pups at one stage, but never played them. Burstbuckers have a nice thick sound, so will be a very different pickup to the EJ, for context

The clean sounds of those EJs sounded really good. Not so keen on the crunch but that would change depending on the amp used anyway. I'd be keen to hear them through a plexi.

The cleans through that Vox made the BB's sound like a ball of mud. It really chimed beautifully.

Cliffs of Dover was actually mostly recorded on a 335!

Yes, they absolutely did. I'd like to try a set.

Interesting... I have to see what other gear he has. I have just listened to a bit of that tune again for the second time ever. Wow, it still did absolutely nothing for me. To my uncouth ears it even rendered the tone somewhat bland. I actually liked the demos I have heard of the pickups, perhaps it was just the tune that affected how my ears heard that tone?

I know Youtube compression etc, but those might be the best humbuckers I've ever heard?

I don't really like humbuckers though I guess.

Not sure if that comparison is fair tbh. The burstbuckers do sound much worse (muddy), but if my guitar started out sounding like that, i'd be reaching for the eq. Then the EJ might have sounded shrill.

But the EJs do sound very clear.
