How does Cavalera get that kickass drone sound during the verses in this song? The guitar sounds like a continuous drone, with just changes in pitch. Maybe it's my tin ears, but I can't hear much pick attack when the pitch changes.
Later on it does change to normal heavy metal guitar, but that drone sounds unworldly.

Sounds normal to me, I think the pick attack gets lost behind the drums and possibly the bass. I guess it's quite a "spongy" sound, which could be any number of things - I found the best way to get close to that sound was to keep a fair amount of mids in your EQ. And mofo heavy strings.

and dont forget to remove the high b and e strings
Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.
