Has anybody mentioned Mr. Zappa? His lead tone was awesome, almost rude in it's cutting nature.
High gain, loads of mids/highs, an open wah pedal.. what more could you ask for to cut through the mix?

I'll go first, Zakk Wylde, No more Tears, wins best tone.
Anything by satriani wins worst tone.
I couldn't disagree more. I used to love Zakk's No More Tears tone but after a break and then hearing it again it really sounds muddy. Way too much chorus before the distortion.
Satriani comes close for both best and worst tone depending on the what he is playing.
As I get older I seem to prefer the sound of a Gibson -> Cable -> cranked Marshall like Angus Young, etc.
That was his country/chorus/chicken picking phase... I like that a helluva a lot more than the stupid fixed wah/wah-wah/more wah phase he's stuck in now...
Anyone who comes close to Buddy Guy live has my vote. This would of course include his emulators... Jimi H, Stevie V, Eric C (well, on a good day... ie. with Cream).

Kenny Burrell has the jazzy side of blues sorted, too dirty to be a straight jazz sound but it cleans up when he picks gently, great dynamics.
Unfortunately the producer/engineer is the person who ends up defining a guitarist tone in the studio, thats before the masterer gets there hands on it. And as all us guitarists know your NEVER really happy with your tone for more than a few weeks
anyway heres my 2 cents :
LP - Page (although I hate zep)
Fender - Gilmore
80's - warren demartini (Invaion of your privacy or Detonator)
My favourite tone all round is RANDY RHOADS "diary of a madman"
and of course my current tone for the next 12 days anyway

Sure am. That site is dead now - and I need to update my website accordingly.
BTW, I heard Zakk's new re-make of No More Tears from his new album. Sooo freakin' terrible! The original was excellent. This new version totally sucks.
