Stoner/doom? There's a NZ forum for that. http://www.stonerdoom.co.nz/

Definitely give Down a crack. Other suggestions would be Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Spiritual Beggars and Corrosion Of Conformity. I had a thread a long while back about this kind of stuff where I got some good recommendations. It might still be kicking around NZG here somewhere.

Yeah most stoner rock is very Black Sabbath influenced, but if you want to listen to something that sounds like Black Sabbath, you can't go wrong with, well, Black Sabbath.

Yeah I've got Black Sabbath's Paranoid which is an awesome album. Though not particularly metal at all, Planet Caravan is a great song. I don't know much about any of their other albums though. Any recommendations?

Heard a bit about Meshuggah too, so will check them out.

Yeah you also need:
Black Sabbath
Master of Reality
Black Sabbath Vol 4
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Sabotage
Technical Ecstacy
Never Say Die
and at a push Heaven and Hell

The thing about Sabbath is they always experimented with their music, so no album is 100% heavy, but every album had moments of ground-breaking heaviness and monster riffage.

Other stoner metal stuff to check out would be the Melvins, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Corrosion of Conformity, Electric Wizard and Orange Goblin.

Also give Alice in Chains and pre-Superunknown Soundgarden a try if you want riffage. Tad as well are well worth a look.

Been browsing forums reading up on some metal... and wooooooooooow is there some fucking elitism in the metal world! I've noticed people mention band 'X' is a post-math-screamo-pogostick-dvd-yellow-core band and people jump all over them going crazy saying how band 'X' is actually a post-math-screamo-pogostick-dvd-BLUE-core band.

Crazy stuff.

Oh and another one is don't dare say Motley Crue is metal in any way.. that's just askin for trouble.

Thank you. I can't believe it took till page 2 to get to this point ;) Heavy riffs = Black Sabbath. That is all. Thank you and goodnight.

:P

Seriously though, despite the increasing heaviness of metal guitar tones, for the riffs, I don't know that anyone has really nailed the heavy riff like Iommi.

Apart from alot of the bands mentioned, you might like 36 crazyfists as well, the bitterness in the star album is slightly more numetal, but still heavy. Cool screaming aswell.

Yeah - I really enjoy metal, but not the community at large for this reason.

I recommend:

They're hair metal, to my mind.

And anyone who takes your average metal lyrics seriously is nuts to begin with, let alone elitist.

Yep, pathetic isn't it. It's mindblowing how many subgenres they've come up with. Most bands don't fit into one category either. That's why I just lump everything from Disturbed to Tool to Children of Bodom together and call it "metal"
