Distortion Guidance.

Post by Slowy »

Standing in for a covers band recently confirmed that I can happily do an entire gig with the Korinacaster. It also showed that I have good tone, but even with a DLS and Boss OD3 maxed out, way too much headroom.

The Korinacaster is a Tele with the heart of a Les Paul Junior. It's way fatter and more powerful than you'd expect. My JTM45 and THD cabinet produce any tone I want, but often at much more volume than I can use. ( And this band ain't quiet. My ears are hurting :( )

I'm looking for a stompbox fix. Think AC/DC, ZZ Top tones. Obviously, it needs to work with single coils and it also needs to be articulate. I often pick with my chubby fingertips and I hate mush.

Hotcakes in this rig are too raspy for my taste. The obvious solution is a small Matamp and a Les Paul, but I'm not Unique.
I've thought of using an attenuator, but I do use those clean tones a lot and it seems easier just to get dirty sound from a box.

Anybody got some suggestions?

G2D Classic. Very much old school Marshall grind and works great at pushing a tube amp and giving it that extra little somthing. Great for AC/DC sounds with a humbucker.

try a Blooddrive :D
Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

the Blooddrive gave Alanp's SC strat a nice crunch the other day, and they're cheap, if you get past the coffin shape  i find it responds well to pick attack as well

The Blood Drive is disturbingly nice, even with the wacky coffin case.

I really like my Caitlinbread Teaser Stallion - great with single coils + humbuckers, versatile & clear. Try one out if you can. (Beware it's second 'kick me out of the band button', though...)

If you're going for AC/DC meets ZZ Top, you should try a Humbucker! ;)

If you haven't tried one of them yet, those Blackstar HT tube 'preamp' pedals are very well designed and can turn your polite clean channel into a tube wrecking ball.
The prollem with most ODs IMO is they require the amp to be pushed hard to sound really good, hence the volume/headroom issues. Get a nice tube preamp pedal and the magic happens on the floor before it hits your amp

No argument from me, but I'm trying to make the Korinacaster into the only gig guitar I need. Cos I really really like it. And a Lollar Special T with the tone wound back 50% is way closer to a humbucker than you might think.

Sweet, then I'll stick with my original recommendation.

I've got one of these, I might be looking at selling it shortly. Sounds great with all pickups and can definitely do the AC/DC thing
