This is what I try to do as well, and I use fairly clean pedals - light OD's or boosts with more volume than gain, to try and push the amp more rather than adding a new sound altogether. Very happy with how it works, but I'm yet to experience gigging with a cranked plexi.babytaylor wrote: I think my preferred option will always be a combo of both: Running an amp hot enough to get a warm clean tone just on edge of break up, and use pedals to push it into full on OD/Dist.

It's not a plexi, but next gearfest, if we can wrangle a cab with enough wattage (I don't trust my 2x12 not to blow), you can dime the JCM, Sooty.

Re: Amp overdrive VS. Pedal overdrive
I tend to just use amp gain "live" and at home I usually use pedal gain mainly because my amp lacks top end at low volumes and I love my marshall pedals

I like how they just remove features with a vivid rather than printing different chassis graphics

When you're paying $5k for an amp, you expect the best.jeremyb wrote:I like how they just remove features with a vivid rather than printing different chassis graphics

Re: Amp overdrive VS. Pedal overdrive
I'm one of those guys that has a sound I hear in my head; the "yeah, that's me" sound. So, one of the selling points for the Mini Rec for me was the OD, specifically the "vintage" setting on the red channel. It's very reminiscent of the Mark I. The clean setting with the gain and master just about dimed yields an incredible, uncompressed OD, but it cleans up really well with a roll back on the guitar volume if I need it; I'm not too concerned about teh kleen hedroomz. With the Fromel Shape EQ in the loop I have almost infinite variations on those basic tones.
That said, I have developed a serious case of GAS for the Quinnamp Hot Buttered Scotch. It's a Dumble-type OD that seems every bit as good as the Zendrive. It won't replace the Mini's OD, but it is a pedal worthy of a spot on the board, as another great tone shaper for the palette.

I hear what you're saying about the Mini Rec - for me, I spent most of my time in the Pushed mode with the gain set to about 11 o'clock to get that warm, breaking up clean and the bulk of dirty time is in Vintage mode with the gain set about the same.Sustainz wrote:I'm one of those guys that has a sound I hear in my head; the "yeah, that's me" sound. The volume/gain jump to Modern mode is quite full-on!
