Because of all my tone chasing, Mr TmcB got me thinking about the tones I really actually dig on record. So, I decided to start a thread... what are you favourite all time guitar tones?

I'm going to go with 7 because I couldn't narrow it down any more. In alphabetical order...

The Black Crowes - Jealous Again
I'm guessing they're using Tweeds for this, and judging by the video (and what they usually play) a combination of LP's and Teles. I like it because it's warm, bright and meaty sounding.

Bloc Party - This Modern Love
Teles into Fender HRD's and Blues Deluxes, with a bit of reverb. It's a really glassy clean tone.

Green Day - Holiday
I always go on about it, but it's a great, raw, muscular rock tone. LP Junior with P90's into a Plexi.

My Chemical Romance - Dead
Hassle me if you like, but I think this captures the squeaky, full tone of an LP into a Marshall really well.

RATM - Bombtrack
It's throaty, raw, mid-sy Marshall goodness. He's playing a super strat, I think.

U2 - All I Want Is You
I like Edge's tone on the whole song, but particularly from 3.24 onwards. Almost makes me want a Vox.

Wilco - Impossible Germany
I love the smooth, chiming sound of both the Jazzmaster/Plexi and the SG/AC30. Sounds beautiful.

Impossible Germany's pretty neat.

*First 3 Camel albums (less mirage) - LP deluxe into AC30 I think,

Pretty much everything Luther Perkins played, because he really only played one thing. Anyway, some notable favourites are the intro to Train of Love. Luther used one of the little-known Echosonics amp, which had a built in tape echo machine.

I also love his sound on Blue Train. Probably his picking technique at its most refined. And Rock Island Line is always great. I also love the bass tone on Folsom Prison Blues live at Folsom, that thumpy Precision Bass sound.

I also like this performance of Big River from 1961 when Luther was using a Jaguar instead of his usual Esquire. The reverb is great.
Johnny Cash is also clearly high as a kite.

Jack White's guitar on The White Stripes Hello Operator is also one of my favourites. The harmonica is quite beasty as well, and both sound great together. This is from their album De Stijl which is my favourite.

There are so many White Stripes songs I could post that have fantastic tone. Black Math, Ball And Biscuit, Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Offend in Every Way, Death Letter.

I've always really liked the tone of The Beatles Get Back. That muffled background riff and the lead parts and the keys.

I also love Dig a Pony

I think I'm semi-right in saying that Beatles aficionados don't consider this the best era of the Beatles. Personally I've never been into the Beatles enough to get caught up in all that. Good music is good music!

And, of course, T. Rex. So many songs with great tone.

Them Crooked Vultures: Scumbag Blues

most of the tones from The Checks' "Alice by the Moon" especially the cool little dreamy bit's floating round the background where it's obviously an amp in a room with one mic a few feet away. You can really hear the rooms and they're not the prettiest sounding rooms but it really works.

Jimmy Page's tones, and how deceptively clean they are on record. Try dialing in a sound similar to his in terms of gain and playing the song. Without the production + Bonzos powerhouse drumming and the thump of the bass it sounds weak as fuck so most people end up dialing in heaps more gain to sound 'better'.

Booker T and the MGs - Sunday Sermon
Lovely clean tremolo with Steve Cropper's usual understated style. I love how vocal he sounds at times and how stripped back and basic the solo is. Easily my favourite of their tracks.

Creedance Clearwater Revival - Born on the Bayou
This is what got me hooked on tremolo. I love the swell at the start and the tone of the solos (from 1:27 but 1:45ish is where it's at) is just so cool- the tremolo really adds a nice texture.

Brian Setzer - Gloria
Cute but cheesy 50s ballad. I love his tone across the board but this is a cool example. The solo at 2:01 in particular is a great example of hollowbody Gretch tone and cool Bigsby wobble.

Madeleine Payroux - Don't Wait Too Long
I find everything about this song utterly inspiring sound-wise. There's a beautiful warmth about it that really draws me in. The guitar solo at 1:22 is just a great, dirty-clean, jazz tone (don't let that put you off- there's none of the usual jazz wankery or complete lack of high frequency content). Lovely phrasing and great tone.
