Shit.
What's that mean in real life, practical terms? Can you do therapy or something? Can you get a 2nd opinion?
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.
Yeah, permanent pain unless I get desperate and get them to fuse the bones. I could look for other treatments, but the specialist didn't have any suggestions.

I'm guessing fusing the bones would inhibit dexterity ?

Pretty much.
I guess when I look at guys like Kris and Iommi that are playing with way worse, I should STFU. It's pretty frustrating, but I feel like I haven't even begun to explore my options for how I can still play with it like this. It could be a blessing in disguise - get me out of the pentatonic box!

Sucks man, but at least you have a good attitude about it so far - that's half the battle sometimes. Just means you'll probably have to push yourself a bit harder to get the results you want.
Half kidding about the pentatonic box, but it's the way I tend to play in there, hopefully this will force me into trying different things with some sincerity. I'm trying to stay positive, it's really a minor thing in the scale of the universe, but it's still bumming me out a fair bit.

it's a pretty big thing in the scale of your universe though, so I can relate to it bumming you out.
I can also relate to the idea of reinventing yourself as a different sort of player. It's a bit daunting, but it can be very exciting as well.
If you want someone to pitch easy basslines over and over at you while you think of ideas, I'm happy to do that, ok?

Thanks mate, much appreciated.
Haven't really had much chance to even pick a guitar up since the baby came along, so maybe I'll try and pick it up again in a couple of months when she (hopefully) requires less maintenance!

Whatever you do, listen to them. I ignored advice and did gigs with my fractured finger and it ended up healing all wrong...big lump on the top of it now.
"Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible god and destroys a visible nature. Unaware that this nature he's destroying is this god he's worshipping." - Hubert Reeves
This may seem like a silly suggestion but its something I considered when my finger became infected and the docs started mentioning the amputation worst case scenario. If you are going to reinvent yourself, would playing left-handed avoid aggravating your pinkie?
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

It certainly would. Not sure if I'm ready to go that drastic just yet - I only just got my dream Charvel last year, and I'm not really in a position to just up and buy a leftie. Just thinking about it now feels all kinds of wrong!
