Digital Reverb. In the loop or before the preamp?

Post by Molly »

What's the consensus on using a digital reverb. In the loop or between the guitar and amp?

Probably depends on how much you're using your amp's preamp for gain.

If it's predominantly a clean platform with pedals for OD, then in front of the amp would be fine. (That's how I've always done it and it worked fine for me.)

If you're getting a lot of juice out of the preamp, then in the loop would probably sound cleaner.

Would that not be the general rule?
Nothing to see here.

It's a Splawn so you'd hope it was pretty good.

Thanks for the replies.

The consensus is there is no consensus. Try both, go with the one you like the sound of.

Reverb, Echo, Delay, the inherent meaning of these words suggest thatthe sound is bouncing around inside a room/hall/cave/canyon after it has been produced by your amp, so loop makes this the most natural place for them, but there's no rules :)

It’s OK in front of the amp if you stay fairly clean. Otherwise the loop is better. The best of all, IMO, is to add the reverb after the mic.
Digital reverb being fed through the poor fidelity of a guitar amp means that the reverb can’t met it’s potential.

Of course their are exceptions, I.E. warm drippy spring reverb from a tube driven tank and effecty reverbs.
