Matt was talking about DiMarzio Areas the other day
Can't find the post where Matt is talking about the DiMarzio Area pickups. Want to do a bit of research on them and maybe try them in my Eric Johnson.
Anybody know where that post was? I can't find it.
Cheers.

Re: Matt was talking about DiMarzio Areas the other day
They are definitely worth a try.
Until the day I tried the Areas, I had never played a noiseless Strat pickup I liked. Fender, EMG, Kinman, Duncan - all the noiseless Strat designs I played were really kinda second rate when stood next to a decent "true" single coil. Most Noiseless pickup designs are missing some upper range harmonics and they tend to have a "compressed" feel.
The Areas are the first I've ever played that delivered proper Strat "feel" without the compression. And their tone is really very comparable to any kind of high-end single-coil pickup.
My Areas booted a longstanding set of Lollars out of my #1 guitar and I couldn't be happier.
I have Area 61 in Neck, Area 67 in Middle and Virtual Vintage Blues in the bridge.

yep. i a surprised one of the music chains said to me they are ditching Dimarzio because people all want SD. I guess it is down in part to SD just has the marketing edge and that affect trends, because Dimarzio make some great pups. yes, i think players can sometimes be suckers for trends in mags and forums etc.

Re: Matt was talking about DiMarzio Areas the other day
I have a set of the pre Area, Virtual Vintage DiMarzios in my Strat. Matt reckons the Areas will be better, but the VV's deliver exactly what I want to hear.
Can't do better than that.

^ Those are lovely pickups. Shame it's so difficult to find them now. Maybe not surprising since they're out of production, but even used examples are scarce. Must be because they've necer found their way out of the guitars they've been put in.

Going to try some in the Eric Johnson I think. Not that those pickups are poor. They're considered very good. I just need to find a reason to persist with that guitar as it looks unlikely I'll be selling it.

Noiseless is an abomination, 50's pickups all the way!

You'll never play at the Michael Fowler Centre with an attitude like that!

Have you played the Virtual Vintage 405 and 406 set? They have exactly what I think of as '50s tone. Noiseless or not doesn't particularly bother me, but it definitely takes nothing away from these pickups. It's an added bonus, if anything. They're fantastic sounding pickups.jeremyb wrote:Noiseless is an abomination, 50's pickups all the way!

As it happens the EJ is quite noisy. I'd be happy to try a set of these in one of my Strats and if they're quite it'd be a nice change.

Those are the ones I have; 2 of one, 1 of the other. Can't remember which. A 54 Strat is supposed to sound sweet and airy and these deliver. They also have a lovely OD voice when driven by a Timmy.twangnsnarl wrote:Have you played the Virtual Vintage 405 and 406 set? They have exactly what I think of as '50s tone.
