An interesting thing I picked up from John Mayer pedalboard builds is that he uses the Katana Boost almost like a compressor, its adding a subtle amount of dirt but mostly compressing the signal pretty hard, I'm doing the same with my Joyo BB Preamp clone, its a pretty cool sound really, anyone else tried this?

I had the Katana Mini. One of my fav boost I reckon. it makes your signal a lot fatter in a very natural way.

I assume the pedal isn't compressing as such, but the hotter input signal is causing the amp to compress?

It's definitely compressing the signal, the boss DS-2 is known for having a massive volume boost when you turn it on in Frusciante everything maxxed out kind of settings, but if I get the boost before it at the right level then I don't get that massive volume increase when I switch it on, the compressed signal going into it tames it

Interesting. So the Katana must have quite a compressed sound, AKA not really a 'clean' boost. Would like to try one

Oh right, yes the keeley katana, the BB Preamp is also known for a lot of compression, they even released a version with switchable compression on and off, like the Joyo Zip Amp which I use which is a clone of that model

Yeah, the "pre-amp" built into the Babyface tremolo is awesome. I sometimes turn down the internal tremolo depth intensity and just use it as subtle compression and harmonic enhancer for cleantones. Sounds better than the Spark mini, but damn the Spark has so much boost available.

I'm finding the clean boost thing with the strat sounds superb, guess its accomplishing the same outcome!

Which comp are you using?

Mines a modded CS3. Did the Indy Mod on a few of them back in the day. I believe Brian Wampler was behind Indy mods before he started his pedal company. Would really like to try a CS2.
