Cool but a bit frightening to work on by the looks . Oh hell, is my thought a negative techy type thing??

My two experiences with Wisconsin:StrummersOfThunder wrote: ↑Sun Jan 14, 2024 6:46 pm Also this is amazing
The spring reverb tank is made in Wisconsin be beautiful women in a sealed chamber
1.) I once crossed into the state just because they sell alcohol on sundays (get stuffed Minnesota!)
2.) I was nearly flattened by a large tornado there.
That’s pretty much all I can contribute to this discussion.

Indont actually think it needs all that much work .
I’ll replace the tape and clean the heads
Will probably recap it at some point too but working in sections that doesn’t look tooooo onerous

Sounds glorious, so whats the story behind you getting hold of this?

That's underselling the journey. It was left to fend for itself on a doorstep in gangland Whangārei. Then it was profusely sweated upon during a highly sensual unboxing process. Then it was hand-delivered to your house with an exsanguinating toddler.

Good idea, it sounds pretty darn good to my ear apart from the noisy rotary selector.StrummersOfThunder wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 7:49 pmIndont actually think it needs all that much work .

Isn’t it rumoured to be good luck when your new gear day is heralded by a toddlers blood trail across the lounge ?robthemac wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 8:45 pmThat's underselling the journey. Replace tape by all means but keep it. You might not like the performance of a new tape.StrummersOfThunder wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 7:49 pmIndont actually think it needs all that much work .

Recapping - if it sounds good and the caps are not bulging, then no
Clean the heads - yes
The rotary switch - clean it with contact cleaner spray while going round and round. This might be more important than a new tape
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

The one time that your lounge wasn't covered in plastic drop sheets....StrummersOfThunder wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 9:08 pmIsn’t it rumoured to be good luck when your new gear day is heralded by a toddlers blood trail across the lounge ?

I haven’t done anything to it yet, but be assured no rotary switch or pot will go uncleaned.
There is a dramatic tone suck to the guitar signal. The dark echo tone I like but that’s dark even with the bassman bright switch on (unheard of). My guess is a new tape will help but maybe some tidying up of the circuit. The caps are likely to be 40-50 years old. I won’t rush to do anything but it is very much a recommended thing for these units. The standard echo fix service kit comes with a complete set of caps for that reason. But I agree with you in terms of tone not always changing for the better. The operation is fairly noisy too so I suspect new caps might help there too
