What wah pedal to get?
Hey dudes, I'm really GASing over a wah pedal - thinking about the Zakk Wylde cry baby on tard me, or a classic cry baby. I'm playing rock mainly, Velvet revolver, Metallica, AC/DC, that kinda stuff. Anyone got any experience with wahs? Probs wanting something with a proper bypass from what I've read on the net. Any help greatly appreciated.

Wahs
If youre handy with a soldering iron, the original crybaby (the cheap, budget one) can be pretty easily modded for true bypass and with the addition of a couple of pots, made fully adjustable. If budget is important and youre a tinkerer, you could probably just go with the basic GCB95.

Also, everything you ever wanted to know about wah circuits:

All the crybabies are built on the same basic circuit and chassis, and while some offer the 'legendary' fasel inductor and true bypass, its kind of difficult to account for the massive price gap between the original and the other models.
The ZW is probably the best of the crybabies, however, as it uses uprated caps and resistors (closer to tolerance) in its circuit which probably guarantees better consistency between units. It also features the fasel inductor and true bypass, so, while you still might want to mod it to adjust the sweep range and resonant peak, its as good a base as anything from the crybaby range.
Theres a lot of wahs out there, and if you want flexibility you might look at the ibanez weeping demon, however i think if you want a solid, reliable wah with a 'straight up' wah sound, then you can't go past a crybaby.

Off the shelf i'd go with the Zakk; for a good versatile wah.
I have a Dunlop 535; you can switch the range; but it pretty much lives in the third position so ??? Haven't tried the newer 535Q but if you want a range selector it could be for you. Or, buy a 535 second hand. A modded GCB95 can be amazing as well.
I had a Morley Wah prior; the 535 does eat the Morley for breakfast.

ZW
I must say having tried many models of Crybaby, I've settled on the ZW for its throatiness and thickness without rippin peoples ears off .........great pedal over priced though....... mind you thats branding for ya

I had a Vox v847... really nice and gorgeous in chrome too. Lotsa 'vowel' and a good amount of play in the middle of the pedal. You can fassel inductor mod them from what I've heard. They pop up on trademe from time to time.
So plenty of options then!? Probably pay to try a few with your guitar in the shop?

I had a Vox847 also, and with the original pot is was awesome. That fvcked out on me and every other pot ever, including expensive booteek stuff, won't cut it. Modern Dunlops and Voxs are vuirtually identicle having ripped a number of both apart.
I tried the Boss (or was it Ibanez) sampling wah - not too bad, but I could still pull a digitised vibe off it.
Sounds like I also need to try a Zakk wah...
