Other than Billy TK, none of those guys are remarkable guitar players, and some (Kilgour) are absolute rubbish. Where's Joel Haines, Jeremy Toy, Andy Lynch, Neil Watson, Sean Clancy etc etc?
You're stating your opinion as fact. Bit silly really. We've all got our own opinions. That doesn't make it correct or incorrect.
I quite like a lot of David Kilgour's stuff, Hammond Gamble I would definitely rate and I have no idea who 3 of the 5 people you mentioned are. Sean Clancy is a posterboy for Langcaster which automatically disqualifies him in my jaundiced opinion.
Nobody's ever going to agree with your list or anyone else's - that's one of the beautiful things about music. And it's not a bloody competition anyway.
Respect to xxxx's grandad for being in some pretty illustrious local talent in that list. Leave it there or start a new thread.
Oh for goodness' sake. When you, or I, write something, its opinion. Saying IMO or IMHO before everything is redundant - it's assumed to be your opinion since you wrote it! My point is, lazy journalism which simply uses the names of people who play guitar and are somewhat famous.
Clancy, though I don't like his music, is a very impressive guitarist, and has written a book on the art of shred (Learn to Burn), as well as doing some pyrotechnic shit on Showcase about ten years ago that I'd say only a handful of NZ guitarists would even attempt, let alone pull off. Have you ever actually played a kauri Langcaster strat (which is what is being endorsed) or are you just jumping on the bandwagon like everyone else who hasn't but doesn't want to disagree?
FYI Joel Haines - Nathan Haines' brother, jazz guitar guru, breathtaking guitarist, and "famous" to a degree.
Jeremy Toy - Opensouls guitarist and Hollie Smith's guitarist/producer. Smith is somewhat famous, no?
Andy Lynch - Lead guitarist in Atlas, formerly Zed, NZ guitarist of the year around 2001 from memory. Sensational guitarist even if he never uses his chops in his somewhat shitty bands. Was playing guitar for Sting when he started Atlas, almost got the gig with Nine Inch Nails. Those are probably better credentials than cruising on the fucking interislander but what do I know.
Neil Watson - session guitarist, especially known in jazz circles, not overly flashy but gets used by everybody in town from live tv work to Bic Runga's album.
I would also say David Holmes should be in that list somewhere near the top.
I was just making conversation, not challenging anyone's views about it. It's all opinion, of course. The fact that you don't know who three of the five I mentioned are does not in fact make my opinion wrong, it might actually make you ignorant.
