like i said, the guitar has a lock nut and has no problem staying in tune, its getting it in tune in the first place and setting intonation that the tuner was for
i guess i was expecting too much from a tuner, i don't consider my tuning ear to be that great so i figured a decent tuner would be better......... not markedly worse
is there any chance your ear is wrong and the tuner is right?

well i guess so......
the tuner says its in tune but i can still hear beat frequencies between notes, and i have to fine tune to get rid of them.
EDIT:just found how to change to "dot" mode instead of "bar" mode and its much easier to get accurate readings now, its almost dead on now

umm yeah, i already got a guyatone MT3........ theres the rackmount korg tuner (DTR2000?) on trademe right now with a $150 buy now had i not got the MT3 i'd probably get it.
the planet waves floor tuner has strobe function as well as the normal (dumbarse that I can use) type.

I'm wondering if the accuaracy of the tuner is the problem - it is impossible to get perfect tuning on any instrument.
Even if you get perfect tuning at the nut and the octave, due to the intervals of the 12 notes all tuning must be a compromise anyway. It can drive you nuts. One chord is perfect, yet another one in another key seems a fraction "off"...
FWIW it's worth, Bruce Welch (when he was rhythm guitar player in the Shadows) got so obessed with tuning he had a nervous breakdown...
As I think about it, I mean any instrument with set intervals (piano, guitar etc).
A violin or fretless instrument - well you choose the exact pitch when you play the note...
