I think I want a wah pedal, but I'm not entirely sure why. I don't really know how to use it, and I have never used one before. So, what can I do with it?
Reading back over this it seems like a pretty dumb question, but I'm just looking for wah-101. How they work, how to use them, features worth having, what to look out for, good ones to buy.

if you want a wah, without having to learn how to use it, go for an envelope filter.. it's an auto wah kinda thing.. think disco/'theme from the professionals'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCFVEvZvo3g
(after watching that, it may be a real wah, rather than env filter, but could go either way)

I was in the exact same position as you when i bought mine. I didn't really know why i wanted one but i wanted one, i bought a crybaby just cause i heard "they were really good" (btw, they are really good in my opinion).
In my experience you don't really have to know how to use one to actually use one. Its one of those things which you can teach yourself and use how YOU like, just cause so-and-so uses his in a particular way doesn't mean its the right way to use it. Mess around with it and come up with your own way to use one, and that'll mean it'll give your unique sound a whole lot more uniqueness
A girl phoned me the other day and said, "Come on over, theres nobody home". I went over, nobody was home.
fret an E9, play heavily swung 16ths, rock wah back and forth in 1/4 notes, mute strings with fretting hand every now and then, add occasional dorian and/or mixolydian licks.
you will need a strat and a sweet afro if you want it to sound proper
Fact is, wah makes a good solo sound like a great solo, in my experience. It makes it sound like you're ripping out twice as many notes as you actually are. Wah is cool.

Hmm...
Call me tomorrow.
too late, my crybaby's on the pedalboard awaiting further instruction...
and NEVER buy an autowah/envelope filter - they're the most FUCKING annoying effect ever, they sound cool for about 8 bars then all you want to do is ram it up the guitarists arse.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.
