Guitarists you rate that no-one else does?
I was watching TV and that GTA4 album came on with Motley Crue's Wild Side. That got me thinking, I really like Mick Mars as a player. His riffs always seem to strike a chord with me (no pun intended). Primal Scream, Kickstart My Heart, Saints of LA, even the overwrought power ballad Without You, he always seems to do stuff that I like. You never seem to hear much about him though. Okay, so he's the quiet guy of a loudmouth band, but I never hear people regard him in the way players like Zakk, Dime, Satch and so on are talked about, magazine articles and so on. Maybe he's not uber-talented or particularly groundbreaking or even original, but his style just fits with my taste.
So who fits into that category for you?

The less-is-more types are the ones I am particularly fond of.
I'm sure other people rate them too but these guys don't get talked about much
Peter Buck (R.E.M, Rickenbacker -> AC30 = awesome)
John Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls)
That guy from Grinspoon. Interesting stuff going on (New Detention album) before they went commercial.
Oh and the Wilson sisters from Heart

Vivian Campbell (Dio hates him)
Jake E Lee (the most underrated player ever in metal, was living in RR's shadow, but brilliant in his own right)
Tommy Bolin (Blackmore was a hard act to follow, but his solo in "you keep on moving" was brilliant)

I would have said Neil Finn, but I do seem to recall some discussion about him being good.
I was listening to Thomas Dolby this morning (Close But No Cigar), and there's some really cool guitar in there that I've always liked. I dunno if it's him or someone else, but whoever it is I like 'im.

Steve Stevens = ridiculously awesome. His Bareknuckle pickup demo clips are insane. Especially the EVH style one.sambrowne wrote:Billy Corgan.

Something about Corgan's soloing style just grabs me.. I don't know what.... and at the same time I wonder if I've ever heard a pumpkins song with a track of James Iha's guitar playing on it

Carlos Carvazo ... love his solo in Cum On Feel The Noize
Richie Sambora - although I guess he is rated

WOW, bang on about Mick Mars Hamo.
There was a story a few years ago that had a gathering of the top guitar talent to lay down tracks on a particular album.
The producer (cutting a long story short) said "of all guys with the big talent ....they were surprisingly blown away the most by Mick Mars."
He said that Mick was the most down to earth & humble guy BUT came up the best ideas.
Kinda speaks volumes of the man in my opinion
MAJOR props to Mick Mars

Chris Cornell. Everyone thinks of him as the singer, but he came up with some great guitar stuff on Soundgarden albums.

Lyndsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac, and whoever played the guitar for Supertramp. Both those guys really knew how to add to a song.

John Frusciante... he's pretty rated I guess, but I hardly ever hear anyone talking about him. Nowhere near enough anyway!
Oh and an unknown - David Henderson.. I really like his stuff.. also a fan of the Two Rock.

Re: Guitarists you rate that no-one else does?
Ed O'Brien of Radiohead. Everyone cites Jonny Greenwood as definitive Radiohead, but Ed played a lot of those distinctive rhythms you can pick right away (intro riff to Creep and Just).
Brian Molko, Placebo. A lot of people forget he's the solo guitar player because he's the vocalist. Lot of interesting chords and riffs.
Allison Robertson, The Donnas. Sounds like she should of been slam bang in 1970-something. The fact she's smoking hot has nothing to do with it... well, perhaps a little.
Rivers Cuomo - the man just writes catchy as fuck stuff. And no one can dispute the awesomeness of his early career tones i.e. Blue Album crunch = grail.

Josh Homme from QOTSA
Frusciante is a much better musician than most people give him credit for. He was trying out for Frank Zappa's band before he was in RHCP.Khann wrote:John Frusciante... he's pretty rated I guess, but I hardly ever hear anyone talking about him. Nowhere near enough anyway!
