Actually one of fave solos that Metallica ever did was To live is to die when it slows down in the middle.
Probably the only solo I ever liked from them and I think its hetfeild playing it.

Trapped in a corner by death also has kick assage in the solo.

Oasis - Live Forever and Champagne Supernova

Cold Chisel - One Long Day, Just How Many Times, Standing on the Outside, Wild Colonial Boy... I could go on. Ian Moss rocks.

You Am I - If We Can't Get It Together

Pretty much anything by John Norum (Europe), but particularly Seven Doors Hotel off the first album. Also, Superstitious by Kee Marcello off one of their later albums is amazing, probably the ultimate melodic/shred solo.

Once heard who can forget Tommy Bolin's solo on Red Baron on Billy Cobham's Spectrum album?
The funkiest fusion strat-solo ever. Bolin burns on that album. Jan Hamer does too. Lots of tributes on Youtube but sadly no link. If anyone knows one please put it up.

I really dug Kirks solo's on 'one' but I think that may be on at least a few peoples top lists.

I really liked a lot of Andres Kissers weird ass lead word on 'beneath the remains' and 'Arise' no particular 1 but yeah.. def far from the norm.

yeah Spectrum is a spanking mug of a record
Ron Carter in 7/4, Bolin on fire, Lee Sklar gives Massive Attack a few ideas and some weed smokers a 20 minute warm up, plus Cobham beating 5 shades of fuck outta his kit

Marcus Miller does a none to shabby Red Baron either.

Yeah, that's a killer record.

Some great stuff mentioned sofar. +1 for Elliot Easton and Andy Taylor. 'tonite she comes' is one of the best solos of the 80s.

If this was an overseas crowd I'd suggest Ian Moss' solos on Cold Chisel's 'forever now'. But down here that's very well known fare.

I was on a bus in the early 90s and this young, hippie looking bus driver was playing a compilation tape. One of the tunes was an insane 12 bar blues solo. I asked him what on earth it was and he said it was Roy Buchanan. It was 'Roy's Bluz' off 'livestock'.

Ry Cooder's absolutely breathtaking slide solo on John Hiatt's 'lipstick sunset' doesn't often come up.

John Mclaughlin pretty much created fusion guitar with his solo on 'right off' on Miles' 'Jack Johnson'. Holdsworth perhaps perfected it with his mind-bending 'devil takes the hindmost' solo on 'metal fatigue'.

Denny Diaz' coral sitar solo on Steely Dan's 'do it again is a great overlooked solo, bettered only by the awesome keyboard solo directly after it. That keyboard solo is something I've always wanted to transcribe for guitar.

Jeff Beck's solo on the version he did of 'manic depression' with Seal in the 90s is a beauty.

Vai's solo on PIL's 'ease' is a shred guitar lightning bolt:

I've always quite liked the solo's from 'Nothing' and 'Day of Redemption' by Norther, on the "Death Unlimited" album. Those, and the one from Slayer's 'Seasons in the Abyss'.

Norther rock.

Solo starts at 2:43 and continues for nearly two mad minutes!
That was pretty insane. love the video game stuff, Morello before Morello.

I never listened to that record, but it must have a ton of great guitar. Steve is kind of like Elliot Easton in that he has such a broad range of influences that he can pull in stuff from all kinds of sources and really create a cool part.

Yep, so many varied influences (Billy Idol packed a sad when Stevens jazzed all over "Whiplash Smile") - a crazy talented dude.

The "Soul On Ice" solo from the Atomic Playboys album is another prime showcase of him going berzerk, unfortunately it's not on YouTube.
