Just pack the inside of the amp with dry ice. doubles as a smoke machine. really, could it get any more awesome than that?

Sure it could. Pack it with ice from your freezer. Once it melts a bit you'll get a smoke machine and a fireworks show!IkeKrull wrote:Just pack the inside of the amp with dry ice. doubles as a smoke machine. really, could it get any more awesome than that?

So what happens with amps belonging to dudes living in equatorial regions where mid winter open air temperatures are higher than an Auckland apartment with the windows closed and the heater on in the summer?

Marshalls were made of rock n roll. In the seventies.Capt. Black wrote:But Marshalls are made of Rock and Roll.

I reckon that you don't have too worry about tubes getting hot if they aren't red plating or glowing orange. It's the transformers running too hot that concern me more in one of my amps.
I've a Trace Elliot Bonneville (Robroymcoy's old amp) and its power tranny gets really hot.

Keeping the transformer cool is what this is all about. The apartment is so hot that I can't wear clothes or I start sweating my ass off (37 degrees C), even with the big fan blowing through the room. It's only a problem until winter sets in but i don't want to risk by new OT or any other parts. Another problem to consider if I start blowing cooler air into a hot amp is condensation, but I'll just rig up the fans on Tuesday and keep an eye on it.Ears wrote:I reckon that you don't have too worry about tubes getting hot if they aren't red plating or glowing orange. Are there windows you can open in your apartment? Fans might just be blowing hot air around inside if there is no fresh air coming from the outsideAquila Rosso wrote:Keeping the transformer cool is what this is all about. Treat it like a welder & 'duty cycle' it, I play my 5E3 about 45mins to an hour then shut down. It could well handle longer but I share your concern for cooking.

Re: Fitting cooling fans to amps?
That's what I do now. Most of these apartment blocks in the city have no air conditioning, so I'm hesitant to run my amp at all atm because it's so hot.calling card wrote:Treat it like a welder & 'duty cycle' it, I play my 5E3 about 45mins to an hour then shut down. I'm going to fit the Marstran JMP50 OT tomorrow, so I'll put the fans in while I'm at it. I might take some pics to chronicle my first ever attempt at amp surgery.
I'll be selling the old JCM800 Drake OT on TM/ME (it's working perfectly). So if anybody wants it for a 50 watt build, make an offer before I list it.

Re: Fitting cooling fans to amps?
Whilst I generally agree that Duct tape fixes everything. Duct taping a fan to your amp seems a little un-couth. If it's genuinely a problem, a fan on a stand pointing at the back may be the best idea, as suggested earlier. THat way, you're not damaging the amp, and then you can use it in the living room, so you can put your clothes back on and stop frightening the neighbours...
Another idea is to put vents in the top of the head. Properly, not with a chisel and some chicken wire.
