For anyone who doesn't know, Black Label Society is Zakk Wylde's band when he's not playing with Ozzy. He writes it all, sings, and plays whatever the hell he feels like. I've been thinking of getting some BLS for quite a while now, and finally got around to ordering an album. I chose the latest album: Mafia.
It arrived from Amazon yesterday. Within minutes I had a bad case of whiplash. I was completely incapable of doing anything but violently banging my head while throwing my fist in the air (fortunately the neighbours can't see into the sitting room, or I would have looked decidedly odd).
To me it sounds kind of "Sabbath in Chains"; a mix of old Black Sabbath (Ozzy era, funnily enough), and Alice in Chains - especially the album "Dirt". A nurse at work today thought he detected a bit of a Dio influence, and at times I can see what he means. It's very heavy, with some absolutely monster guitar playing. Zakk's vocal's are very reminiscent (no surprise) of Ozzy and Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, but more gritty - at least more gritty than Ozzy.
....pause .... bang head some more .........
Seriously, if you like guitar rock, you should do yourself a favour, and check out BLS. Mafia is definitely a good album to begin with. Zakk is a monster
