Boss Micro Recorder

I'm thinking my kids might like to get me a Boss Micro BR-80 for Christmas. Nice little 8 track recorder with drum loops and FX built in to play around with while laying around over the holidays. Anyone got one of these? Any tips, suggestions, alternatives???

Also, if someone at a Rockshop in Auckland can offer me good cash deal.... (I mean offer my kids a good cash deal, of course). Cheers.

I have played with one ... they are very cool ... although I found it limited but then I was comparing it to the bigger ones.

What I haven't played with is the BR80 which is different to the Micro BR.

The BR-80 seems to have a couple of major plus points - 8 tracks vs 4 on the Micro BR, and it can take a 32GB memory card, whereas the Micro BR only handles up to 1GB.

Is $429 the best price though???

I recently got a micro BR off trade me and I like it a lot for practice. So far I've mainly just used it for playing along with MP3s and its been great for that. I haven't really used the recording functions yet but the unit is really easy to use and the learning curve is pretty shallow for everything I've tried so far. Sound wise you're probably not going to get the 'sound inside your head' but there's some very usable pre-sets and you can tweak stuff if you're that way inclined. The fact that it only takes up to 1 GB is a a pain (you can put in a higher value card but the unit will still only recognise it as 1 GB) so the BR-80 would be the way to go. It's also pretty hard on the batteries so you'd definitely want a power adaptor or rechargables. Despite the warnings of doom in the manual about using anything other than a Boss PSA adaptor in the manual, I've been powering mine with a generic one with the same specs with no issues.

Thanks matman, very helpful. I expect it will run off my Godlyke power supply with no problem, uses about the same power as a Boss pedal.

Despite the terseness of Dave's reply, the Rockshop's prices on Boss are pretty competitive. I checked ebay and $429 is better than you could get shipped from the US, plus you'd still have warantee/consumer guarantees act cover (even though he's too tight to chuck in a free CCC for ya).
