guitar set up in akl
Hey all,
Just bought a new guitar, it has a floyd bridge which is a new experience for me.
I'd like to get it restrung with a lower string gauge and the action lowered.
Where would I go in auckland to do this?
Cheers

A standard setup is $70 plus strings regardless of type.

Hey Adrian, just so I know, you're still taking on setups then? I'm never sure whether you're snowed under or not

The guy I go to is less... but he always sets it up for fingerpicking and low action. Always.

Short answer = yes.BG wrote:Hey Adrian, just so I know, you're still taking on setups then? I'm never sure whether you're snowed under or not
Long answer = It all depends on what's here on a given day. I'm very close to closing the queue for the year as there are a bunch of big projects to finish.
Yep, there are people around who charge twice that for the same work. Some who charge for work that probably doesn't need doing. Some who charge to subsidise other people's nightmare filth covered guitars. One guy up here charges $400 for a setup that is actually a case of him fixing everything he thinks the factory did wrong whether the customer agrees or not. You have to know what you want and also what the guy with the spanners thinks a setup constitutes.Polar Bear wrote:Fuck, that is cheap.ash wrote:A standard setup is $70 plus strings regardless of type.
Then you should tell him what you actually want. Get measurements so you can specify them next time.alanp wrote:The guy I go to is less... but he always sets it up for fingerpicking and low action. Always.
My definition of a standard setup = Clean everything that needs cleaning and adjust everything that needs adjusting for up to an hour. If your guitar is a filthy twisted dog, some cleaning or adjustment may not fit into the hour and be sacrificed. Restringing is preferred. Assess/report the state of the instrument. Don't remove any material except cutting the nut slots properly and the odd dodgy fret. It's routine maintenance, not re-manufacturing.

It would be cool if you could run like a clinic showing people how to do the basics themselves. Like sell tickets and stuff, attendees could get some basic tools as part of the package. You could combine it with Ryan who can show basic amp maintenance or something.
Then I would be able to legitimately claim a trip to Auckland as a deductible expense.
Seriously though, I'd pay $80 to get knowledged up by the pro's. Get 12-15 people to attend (you could probably get that from this board alone), that's $960-$1,200. Buy some cheap tools to give away ~$150-200 or so. Split the profits between the two of you, could be a decent couple of hours' work.
And...yeah. This is the type of shit I think of when I'm bored on a Friday night: ways I can legitimately claim tax deductions.

Except that would probably cause them to lose half their business... because for the price of a single set-up, everyone learnt how to do it and now wont come back.twistedthoughts wrote:It would be cool if you could run like a clinic showing people how to do the basics themselves. so you'd pay 80 bucks to get the knowledge of somebody who charges 70 bucks a setup.twistedthoughts wrote:It would be cool if you could run like a clinic showing people how to do the basics themselves. Yeah bro - and the people who went to the Jeff Loomis guitar clinic are all now professional guitarists who tour the world.Zaulkin wrote:Except that would probably cause them to lose half their business... because for the price of a single set-up, everyone learnt how to do it and now wont come back.

I think this would potentially help reduce some of the less lucrative work which would enable Adrian / Ryan to focus on the good stuff. If I could learn everything Adrian and Ryan know within a couple of hours, they wouldn't be in business.

I think that's a bit short sighted.BG wrote:so you'd pay 80 bucks to get the knowledge of somebody who charges 70 bucks a setup.

Do you think that after a couple of hours you'll be able to set up a guitar the same as a professional luthier with years of experience? I'm talking about the basics here. Like enough to keep your guitar going a little longer between professional set ups. If you're going to target hobbyists who have their gear serviced every five years, then no it wouldn't be particularly lucrative. I think there's enough people like me who need their gear to be in good shape week in / week out who could benefit from something like this without rendering Adrian and Ryan redundant.
