1956 Hofner 456
One of my grandfather's guitars, his first guitar, a hofner archtop from 1956 is starting to weather.. It still plays nice but has what I believe is lacquer cracking on both the front and back.
Is this lacquer cracking and could it be easily/fixed?

Welcome along.
My opinion is that old guitars have a right to age. If the finish is cracking of its own accord, that's cool. Let it show its age proudly.

Agree with Rog.
It looks like you may have polished the guitar with something at some stage? Either way, given the cracks expose wood, no product should be used if cleaning it. Just a damp cloth to wipe and buff with a proper polishing cloth.
Looks cool btw.

Cheers guys,
Unaware of it ever being polished with a compound. The cracks only started within the last 5 years.
I'd never sell it as it has too much sentimental value to me, but any idea of what it's worth?
I'll post up my 1950's guyatone next!

In terms of value, probably not that much sorry to say. Less than $700 in my guestimation.

Hofners are great guitars; all that anyone in UK had really, while the USA embargo was on, thereafter the market was flooded with Gibsons and Fenders, no bad thing but these are great instruments with lot's of character. Here is a link that will help you and even have it listed: http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/ Steve Russell is a font of knowledge wrt Hofners

I like this cracks and all, they are not something I would worry about personally. These old instruments have a charm that is appealing.

Leave the Laquercracks alone! Its part of the vintage mojo. If you remove them, you will remove mojo.

Tone is in the cracks.
