Painted my Custom Shop '65 RI
Bought a Custom Shop '65 that'd been refinished a few times. Was originally Lake Placid Blue but was given a custom finish (first pic) then a diamond white job. Anyway, I didn't like the diamond white as it was too vivid and the paint had a plastic feel to it. With the aid of the chaps on here I sourced some nitro aerosols in surf green and this is how it's gone. I'm reassembling it at the moment but am out of strings.

Lovely, fantastic colour choice!
So that first pic of the Clapton Strat, was that what it looked like before?

Nothing to see here.

I thought the first photo was the finished product. Interesting to see the 'Relic' stamp. Was that visible through the paint before you stripped it?
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Re: Painted my Custom Shop '65 RI
Cheers.
Yes. That's how it looked before. Not to my taste to be honest (not that that matters as it was white when I got it).
I masked off any RELIC stamps or other CS markings inc. the 65NOS in the neck pickup hole. Not all were visible until I stripped it. In fact, I masked-off all cavities save for the jack plug one. Not for any arty 'let it breath' reason. Just thought it'd be easier to refinish if I stuffed-up the job. Learned a lot along the way. I'd do a better job if I was to do it again. Hardest part was ensuring I had a very thin finish without sanding through to the primer. Also, aerosols seem to produce a lot of orange peel that's a bugger to flatten-off.
Removing the original finish even revealed where someone had penciled LPB in the control cavity.

Good finish, but I'd rather have the crash paint job!
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Lucky I've still got your address. I can send my stuff down to you to paint!

Looks like a nice job, and very smooth considering what you say about the aerosols producing orange peel. I like the white, but I think I can see what you mean about it being too vivid and plastic-y from the picture. Olympic white would've been a better choice there.

looks amazing.
If you make it to the CHCH gearfest I'll be really interested in talking to you as I have another project guitar coming up in the future that I'd like to spray this time rather than Truoil.

Thought about Olympic white actually. Had a list of genuine '65 colours to choose from. Even shell pink was a contender.twangnsnarl wrote:Looks like a nice job, and very smooth considering what you say about the aerosols producing orange peel. Sure. I'll make it this time. Learned what to do from this video and others in the series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-0eexpmRh8

Shame to cover over that really nice grain. A translucent finish would've been nice.

Re: Painted my Custom Shop '65 RI
Someone else said that but I've three translucent Strats and I thought it'd take a lot more skill than I have to make it look half as good as the others do.Conway wrote:Shame to cover over that really nice grain. A translucent finish would've been nice.
Just tagged on a couple of finished pics to the original post.

Damn the wood grain, that crash paint job looked pretty near perfect. Not that I like mark turner that much! Hohoho!
