Know him - love him, but had forgotten about him. Will re-acquaint myself.otisredding wrote:Steve Earle is your man, bro. John Hiatt - Two of many albums - "Crossing Muddy Waters", "Slow Turning",benderissimo wrote:I need something new to listen to and I'm leaving towards roots and country tinged stuff at the moment but I'm struggling to find anything that excites me. I like the idea and sound of rockabilly and alt country (really anything rootsy tbh) but so much of it seems derivative. Where should I start looking?

Roots and/or alt country- eddikat me
I've got some awesome stuff out of this thread but the highlight for mine is Pokey LaFarge. Just brilliant.

TOTALLY. Hiatt is a songwriting genius. Slow Turning has more great songs than most songwriters whole careers.

That man can write a song.
Though I'd put 'bring the family' at the top of the pile to listen to. Added bonus: Cooder.

Jason and the scorchers will put hair on your chest...benderissimo wrote:I checked that out the other day. Pretty cool.FunkUncle wrote:Some good offerings here.
As a side, I posted the YouTube to The War on Drugs the other day. Try that for something different. ...I'm loving the Dylan esque vocals and cool 70s/80s effects .
What I think I'm really interested in is finding something country tinged, but with a bit more attitude and groove.

Yeah, the problem with "non derivative" is that one has to go back a long way.benderissimo wrote:Oops. Only saw the first part of that one...Vince wrote:Vince wrote:I also like Ry Cooder's "Paradise and Lunch" album. Perhaps some John Hyatt? (Bring The Family's good)
But seriously, that "Bring The Family" album is marvelous. And it has "Lipstick Sunset" and "Have A Little Faith In Me", so you can't really lose, unless you really hated those Toyota ads.

Great playing but AWFUL production. Late 80's over slick at it's worst. I'd love to hear that album remixed sans all the digiverb and EQ. YMMV.Vince wrote:
