Cool.
Was thinking of a JCM800 and then started reading about the 5150, So I just popped the question here to see who had one.
The general theme about the clean channel seems to be the same everywhere, but alot of folks seem to rave about the crunch etc. At 120watts it seems a bit OTT. but then most head and cabs are.
The hunt continues.

check out the marshall heads if you dont hate the marshall tone lol, i find marshalls rather natural sounding amps compared to some, they sound fine to me, and the price as alrite, but there is still better, and i still wish i could own a soldano or a ENGL head, money always comes into equation tho dont it.
success is fleeting, but artistry lasts forever.

I owned one of these when they first came out... it fried itself in 2 weeks, and I opted for a Marshall Monobloc / JMP/ JFX setup instead of having it back. As the guy says in his auction.. 60w is plenty, don't know how or where you would use the 120w head to it's full potential, unless stadiums are your venue of preference.
Common misconception with 5150's is pre gain all the way up, master down. All you get is a buzzy 5 preamp tube hornets nest if you do this. The 'brown' sound comes from driving mostly the power amp section, not the pre amp. To get that articulate 'sound' from a 5150, you want the pre gain around 1/2 way, post gain around 2/3. Check photo's of Eddie's live settings, and you will see this.
They are damn heavy units as well, and a bit awkward to carry due to their 'oversizing'.
I still like these amps a lot, but don't know if I would own one again. To me, pedals didn't sound good in front of it, and it had to be 'seriously loud' to achieve it's desired tone. A bit of a one trick pony...... but as always... YMMV
