First it was "you can get a guitar as good as this Suhr for half the price"
Now it's "me and my forum buddies know how to make better guitars than PRS"

Everyone knows Squier JVs are better than Suhrs and TAs for 10% of the price.
And Spam is just like hot ham and 1/3 the price...

Re: No Suhrprise to anyone - but here it is!
Add to that Matt the further interesting question - have the nay-sayers ever played a PRS and/or Suhr?
As an owner of a number of guitars including PRS and Suhr I can say first hand that their price tag appropriately reflects their impeccable build quality.
I'm not saying that PRS or Suhr is for everybody, but quality is never going to be a reason for not owning one!

Re: No Suhrprise to anyone - but here it is!
PRS is actually an interesting one.... They are notable in that they are ALWAYS improving and are ALWAYS ahead of the curve.
Back in the early 2000's I owned a few PRS's. They were better made than ANY other big name guitar at that time.
Nowadays, I play some of those guitars from that era and I'm less impressed. The build quality is impeccable, but they lacked some mojo. The REST of the guitar industry caught up in a lot of ways and I think that a lot of people now make guitars today that are as good as / better than PRS were back then.
But here's the kicker. PRS (unlike many manufacturers) are constantly improving......in significant steps. They really are innovators in their field. A PRS from 2014-2015 is a VASTLY superior guitar to a PRS from 2005-2006. The newer PRS's have the quality AND the vibe.
Doing an apples for apples comparison of a PRS vs any other big name from the same year.....PRS will usually smite the competition.
If you haven't played a current spec Custom 24 or 408....you really should. They are lovely, vibrant beasts.
Suhr play in this same exact ballpark and go toe to toe with the best of them.

Re: No Suhrprise to anyone - but here it is!
Interesting you note that Matt, because I've found the same thing with the PRSes I've tried/owned. I have some very nice recent (i.e.: last 2-3 years) ones so I decided to try some older (approx 2000s) ones on the basis that I expected them to be better having had a chance to age. Yet I was surprised to find that the older ones didn't do it for me in the same way.
I will also add, now having had the chance to noodle a bit on my new Tom Anderson Mongrel (although not yet through an amp) that I'm putting TA into the same camp as Suhr. The quality is quite stunning.

There's obvious stuff like pickups (new models every year for the past 5 years or so), hardware (they do their own bridge designs in house) and neck shapes.AiRdAd wrote:That's a very interesting post Matt. That's a good point about how prs are improving and ahead of the curve in terms of development.
Out of interest, what things are they doing to improve etc?
What I think has made a huge difference are the new techniques they've developed recently for seasoning their wood. Also their V12 lacquer that they devloped and used from 2012 (I think) onwards made a significant difference.

My point was that the manufacturing process is absolutely archaic. Not even the most basic QC tools are used ( go/no go gauge or even a ruler), it's a joke. 'Sand until it fits' is a high school woodwork strategy for kids who can't measure right, not a mass production post CNC-machining technique. It'd be like ferrari honing cylinder bores with a hand held drill.
And this is all sold as 'craftsmanship' to the buyer. Few other high end products could survive with that attitude let alone use it for marketing!
