Help. What acoustic?
I need help. I've been saving for a wee while, either for a new amp, an acoustic, or a Strat. I've decided that To go for an acoustic, since a strat wouldn't be much different from my CV tele, but would take me another year of saving to get the 3K I'd want to spend.
OK, so I have 750 bucks and want an acoustic, I reckon OM/000 size. Should I just go to Rockshop, Music Planet or Musicworks here in Auckland and trust them, since I wouldn't know what was a good guitar. Will anything around that price be much of a muchness
Any advice welcome
Derek

Re: Help. What acoustic?
Hi
Id go second hand personally, but with and acoustic id really recommend trying it out first.
For $750 its not unheard of to pick up something that went for over 2 grand new.
there have been some very nice japanese (takmine, K. yairi, yamaha to name a few) and canadian acoustics that have been carried by NZ retailers and these come up regularly on trade me.
my last acoustic was a takamine that went or $2700 new that I bought for around $500. Another forum member just spent $475 on a yamaha that was close to 2 and a half grand new.
Youll be looking for a solid top id say, so enquire about that if youre not sure.
heres a nice yamaha (Tiawanese)
Ebony fret board, pretty fancy hardware. Nice. $700 start. Im even tempted!

By the same token, if you head into any of the major retailers you will probably get a good deal but in that price bracket you will be buying chinese or korea. Not that that is a bad thing, its just worth considering.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Re: Help. What acoustic?
The problem with recommending guitars is that everyones taste is different. The boring but true answer is to go play the ones in the shop and decide which one suits you.
That said, i got a shop soiled one of these for about 700 and im happy with it.

Re: Help. What acoustic?
If you want new, go and try as many as you can, plenty in that price range, you'll find something you love for sure

How can I be sure I'm here?
The pills that I've been taking confuse me...

Re: Help. What acoustic?
ditto on the buy used! Actually there was someone on here looking to sell a Maton, that could be an epic buy
Help. What acoustic?
Thanks for the tips guys. I looked at the Yamaha on TM and was tempted, but as you all say, I need to try some guitars out to find what's right for me. So tomorrow I'll be in MP, Rockshop and Musicworks. I may not buy tomorrow, but I should come back with a idea what I want.

Re: Help. What acoustic?
There's a mahogany one on one of the facebook groups, with hard case and a k&k pure pick up for $900. No idea if that is good value here in NZ?twangnsnarl wrote:Perhaps a used Taylor GS mini if one comes up.
Bought one of these in the States, and love it!

Sister in law has one of those. Excellent guitars, if not quite my cup of tea tonally.

Help. What acoustic?
Went to Rockshop. Tried a number of the Taylor's around 1K and cane away with the mahogany GS mini. Had a very nice tone. A bit warmer than the Sitka top. The action is higher than my tele, and I'll need to work on my F chords to get the B string down. Very happy, and just having a cuppa on High Street. I'll upload a photo of my new family later on. Thanks for all your help. Also thanks to Richard at Rockshop

Loosen the strings, take the saddle out, use a ruler and sharp pencil to draw a line on it, put some sandpaper on a flat surface, sand down the bottom of the saddle to the line. Replace saddle, tighten strings, check no buzzing frets, repeat until bravery runs out!derekk19 wrote:The action is higher than my tele
