Garageband / Home Studio Quandry
Any "serious" garageband users on here? was thinking about spending the $299 to buy Logic but feel that would be better spent on hardware, like a decent vocal mic, some great headphones, or an interface (been using the one in my HD500X so far) etc for my own personal recording requirements... I have a midi keyboard coming, and don't think I can justify monitors yet....
I know there are free DAW's out there, Reaper and the one Bender posted, but I quite like garageband for it's simplicity and if I do get Logic in the future the interface is basically the same...
Thoughts?

I haven't done much recently with recording - but I found the shift from garageband to Logic relatively straightforward.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

I use Audacity. It's good enough for my garage recordings which are actually recorded in a tin garage.
Cheapest setup I could figure out to replace the tascam when it died:

Re: Garageband / Home Studio Quandry
Yeah I'd use Audacity instead of Garageband. Garageband is ok when you ONLY work within it, but exporting your session to another DAW (that isn't Logic) is a nightmare.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A
Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

Re: Garageband / Home Studio Quandry
What are you looking at recording for? Just demos for your own use, or are you expecting to do some tracking which you send to your engineer/producer?
Or are you thinking of the full process where you expect to record everything and release to public?

Ummm....

Definitely the latter, do it all and direct release

Another vote for Logic, it is way better and an easy transition. But you're gonna need the other shit too

with DAW's it seems to be dictated by where you start-i cut my teeth with audition so reaper was my eventual home.Maybe you could *cough* try before you buy,see if its too big a leap.

Pretty much this, I got an 'evaluation' version of logic before I finally went that path. Theres a shitload of content, plugins whatever so its actually a bloody good price! Garageband is ok for knocking up stuff quickly.Kris wrote:with DAW's it seems to be dictated by where you start-i cut my teeth with audition so reaper was my eventual home.Maybe you could *cough* try before you buy,see if its too big a leap.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

yeah I use reaper..don't see the need for anything else as it does all I need it to do and is quite "gentle" on the computers processing power (well as long as every track doesn't have reverb anyway )Kris wrote:with DAW's it seems to be dictated by where you start-i cut my teeth with audition so reaper was my eventual home.Maybe you could *cough* try before you buy,see if its too big a leap.

Re: Garageband / Home Studio Quandry
theres pros/cons to all platforms.reaper handles everything but midi editing is pretty painful at times.I know my PT mates are always bemoaning being tied to certain versions depending on their OS version.I find it incredible that offline rendering is only a recent addition to PT!
