Fairly sure the current production chinese Guilds (Westerly collection) have abalone or fake abalone or mother of toenail or whatever soundhole surrounds.codedog wrote:Really? Re: Dreadnoughts... your thoughts?
I have two Takamines.
Both TAN-16C models with one being a 12 string.
They are from the Pro series range of guitars and both sound rather lovely.
The neck on the 6 is very comfortable. The neck on the 12 almost reminds me of Martin 6 string width.
Solid spruce tops, solid rosewood backs with laminated sides.
12 has the Cool Tube preamp which is rather lovely too.

Ah... right... mine is of the previous collection, the Guild Acoustic Design series. It has been replaced by the Westerly series.telefiend wrote:Fairly sure the current production chinese Guilds (Westerly collection) have abalone or fake abalone or mother of toenail or whatever soundhole surrounds.codedog wrote:Really? Ahh I see. It's such a minor thing to get hung up about, but there you go. Nothing looks grosser on a guitar to me, especially if it's in combination with mahoganycodedog wrote:Ah... right... mine is of the previous collection, the Guild Acoustic Design series. You're not the only one, I get hung up on tiny, often ineffectual, things too! Again, personal tastes

Diplomats I've played have ranged from somewhat playable to 'it's a slide guitar'. A high school music room special.codedog wrote:Buy it and let us knowolegmcnoleg wrote:I've not seen this model before...any good?

Nothing wrong with that! It's an acoustic, not a 100w stack for your living room.AiRdAd wrote:That's my motto!!!!codedog wrote:

I'm beginning to realise that this acoustic malarkey could quickly become an expensive rabbit hole.

I find them so much harder to gel with than electrics. Most any electric I can play and it's much the same to me as any other, but not so with acoustics. Can pick one and strum it and immediately go yep or nope.

Re: Dreadnoughts... your thoughts?
I played a Mexican made Martin a friend just bought. Mahogany version. Super crisp without being harsh. I played it for a decent hour and could have kept going.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

They're really nice players huh? Not a huge fan of the gunstock-looking necks, but that's just aesthetic.Delayman wrote:I played a Mexican made Martin a friend just bought. Mahogany version. Super crisp without being harsh. I played it for a decent hour and could have kept going.

you can find these threads for basically any brand if you start lookingrobnobcorncob wrote:Cole Clark are great until they start to buzz...

there are millions on taylors having the top split or come away from the sides
in USA you can send them back to factory for repairs and many many do
If you make a quality instrument out of wood it is highly strung beast, made of extremely light thin components that are extremely humidity sensitive materials and if you don't treat it right it will bite you
the taylor site is full of How tos on weighing your guitar and either drying or wetting your guitar to get the neck and action back to correct. how to tell if the grain is too dry by looking at the top and back shapes and even the laminates and varnish wrinkle
a big heavy ibanez or takamine is not the same thing.
not saying one couldn't sound any better, its a personal choice thing but if you want a thin light resonant guitar you need to be someone who appreciates and treats it with respect.
If your going to leave it in the back of the car then get something built like a tank
