The original JP solo. Maybe 'cause I always like the original (or the first one I heard)!werdna wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 7:49 pm This is so cool.

Of the three I'd go for Mr Beato, it's even and perfectly executed. The other two sound like run throughs rather than deliberate takes but given it was his presentation, maybe Phil and Eric couldn't really be arsed.

Beato for me. Eric Johnson just reminded me of all the reasons I don't like his playing. And yeah Phil X just didn't get that close to Eddie

Bang on the money. EVH always skidded all over the place like he was about to fall down, but he always landed on his feet.

Eric Johnson didn't bring out the drama. Hadn't prepped enough.

The original is largely A pentatonic minor with an F thrown in at the right moments. The Beato version is similar except he adds the rest of the minor scale so overall it is less pentatonic sounding. And it's slightly busier.

It's really difficult for my brain to comprehend any other solo than the original, personally. This video kinda feels like people throwing licks at a chord progression rather than trying to coherently compose something memorable over it (which again is probably an impossible task).

I agree. Rick Frampton seemed most in tune with the song while not flat out aping the original. The others just weren't there for me.
I always felt sorry for the guy doing the STH solo in the Led Zep Kennedy Centre Honours show. The one withe the Heart sisters and Jason Bonham. The whole version was sublime. Sorry for him at first because it was a truncated rendition in front of the actual members of Led Zep. Talk about pressure!
But then he kind of took it off somewhere else and made it his own. After that I'm going "Respect, man!"
