Close micing tom toms

I usually use the "leftover" mic's to close mic the tom's or rely on the overheads and room mic's to capture the tom tom action.

I'm looking at buying some mic's specifically for close micing my studio set - 12", 14" rack and a 18" floor tom.

Please chip in with any advice, I'm all ears.

Back in the day I used 421's on toms...but I only had two mics for 2 toms. Lately I've had great results from fairly inexpensive SE brand small condensors. They're fairly unobtrusive and you can use them for all sorts of other things. The small condensor pencil mic is very versatile and under used these days in my opinion.

I agree with this notion. We found small condensers gave the attack we wanted on the toms better than anything else we tried. We were even using the Behringer cheapies.

CAD M179s sound awesome on toms too. They’re a medium diaphragm condenser. They used to be fairly cheap, but there’s no official rep here any more.

Getting fairly good results from the P170's.

Maybe the M179 for the big 18" on the floor.

A lack of a pad might be a bit hot for close micing drums.

I also like condensers on toms. Have had excellent sucess with the mini condensers from Audio Technica, they have a lovely clean attack and are very wide band, so you can EQ a lot to find the sound you want. Think they are an ATM350, but there is or was a cheaper version called the Pro35. Incidentally, the Pro37 is an outstanding mini condenser too, highly recommended.

57’s are good tom mics too, but the long body is awkward for live use. Sennheiser e604 and e904 are good but I still prefer the mini condenser type

Thanks! I have just ordered an Audio Technica ATM450 so will give it a go and maybe get another couple if it gels. I'm still really interested why the Sennheiser MD421-II made such an impact, back in the day, but $750 is a big outlay only going by reputation.
