I had a band mate who played a Stingray. Sounded really warm.

They are indeed. Great sound when you can tame it. :-)

Cool article here.

Stingrays are temperamental beasts. Some days they sound grunty, smooth, zingy, and gorgeous, others days they sound like kicking a cardboard box. Definitely can have a honky midrange.

Once you learn how to drive them, they are some of the best tones ever. I do think the magic recipe is 2 band EQ + Alnico, although I am partial to a punchy ceramic.

I have a Stingray Special 5HH with the “upgraded” electronics and Neodynium pickups. They sound pleasant and smooth but hard to get the zingy character out of them.

Got an H pickguard, got Rob Matthews to do a minor route so it can take 90’s Soapbar pickups, changed the HH switch to a Series/Single/Parallel switch, built a 2 band eq and added a Josh East MidPot (concentric with mid cut boost and mid freq)

It sounds SO GOOD and weighs under 3kg.

Best bass I’ve ever owned by far.

Absolutely this.
I've been through this a few times and approaching it from a different angle this time.
A Stingray Classic 4 with alnico pickup. Flatwounds and judicious use of the mutes I reckon 🙂

Yeah 2EQ Stingray with flats its hard to go wrong.

I’ve never understood the “weak G string” thing but I’ve never owned a 5 just played a few.

Interesting for some (maybe) is it’s the only Bass I own where the Volume seems to play with the tone. Rolling back on the vol makes the Bass boost better imo

You can go by the year I think - don’t think looking at it would help much to figure out anyway

Apparently Alnico you can see the 8 magnets

Ceramic has two bars covering the bottom of the 8 poles👍
